Read your owners manual. The Z has an automatic climate control system. It decides whether to use the A/C or heat depending on the temperature in the car and the temperture you choose on the dial. It also decided on whether to use inside or outside are depending on ambient temperatures. While the A/C light may be on, the clutch on the compressor may be disengaged and the unit is idle.

If you prefer, you can turn the compressor off manually by pressing the button in the control dial. At that point, you're pretty much controlling it all yourself.

having the A/C on does not just cool the air, it also removes moisture to prevent your windows from fogging, so having the A/C on while running the heat helps keep your windows clear. They do not cancel each other out.

also sometimes if you have the heater on without the a/c function on, your cabin tends to fog up cuz of moisture and humidity, if you turn the a/c button on while the heater is on, its still hot but it will blow less humid air thus reducing inside fog.

I always wondered about this. I got a remote start installed couple weeks back.. Every time i remote start the car in the morning i leave the heat on and it always starts with the AC on.. Sometimes when i'm outside and remote start I can hear a loud clicking noise. Reason why i got remote start is so i could warm up the car on those cold mornings. Am i putting more pressure on the engine doing such or paranoid?

Good question, always wondered the same thing. Kept turning the AC off every time I needed heat or just to get air from outside flowing through the vents. Figured Nissan wouldn't be ignorant enough to turn your AC on to cool your car if the temp was set at 80.

I think it also has something to do with making sure that the fluids in the AC system are circulated even during the months when you might now want AC.

In Phoenix, we almost always use AC, but I would imagine that where it snows, you might not want the AC on for at least 4 months or more (continuously). Not circulating the fluids during that time could cause premature wear on the AC system.
