My old E30 M3 was clamshell. Easier to work on with a typical hood opening though.

could you maybe set it up on some kind of slider system and use some probs and bring it back over the windshield? Like the car though and good luck with what your trying to do.

Problem is finding the appropriate place to mount the brackets...I'll look when I get home, and see if there's any safe place to mount to.

Not to mention a lack of being able to work on the front of the engine.

Appreciate the help guys. I think I will have to make a plate over to mount the Hinges too... what actually troubles me is how to latch it... the autoloc universal comes with hinges no latching device... going with actuators runs about 900.00 - Little to much money right now.. still recouping from paint job....

...apparently you've never stood by a car with a front lifting hood...its actually easier to work on the engine.

i think its a cool idea, especially since the old datsun Zs had front tilt hoods.

I was gonna say maybe there would be a way to make it work it a 90 degree angle hinge.

Basically the same steps you would take to open a door with a vertical door kit, like you would lift it up say 2-3" and the bring the hood towards you and it would sit on a 90 degree angle... which could be adjusted to sit at a smaller angle for show or something... i would believe it could definately be done, you would just have to make sure those hinges are worth a damn or you're hood will crash im sure lol

That should not be a major problem as most "serious" engine work will require removal of the front bumper.

FWIW: Come on guys take it easy. The OP is looking for creative engineering solutions. It would be nice if we could help first....THEN crtiticize. Whatever your opinion on the cars graphics at least there is an attempt to try something different.

OP: You could try a generic set-up from someone like autoloc; but I think it will be cheaper and better designed for your application if you DIY. With the weight of the hood & the angle it will be leaning ( picture the famous leaning tower in Italy) the stress the bracket will be subjected to could be significant. I would suggest designing a bracket that will tie in structurally to he front end; either the radiator supports and/or the fenders. Please post if you decide to do this kind of project.

can not wait for pics, nice to see another local Z with some style. I would like to see a reverse hood that the bumper and fenders all go forward like a race car.

I love the look of a hood hinging at the front of the car. My 280ZX and XJ8 both do it and looks great. Now those two have long hoods and not much to little bumper so you can still access everything in the engine bay easily.

Hope to see some pics. I bet it looks great. Not to mention a neat way to customize.
