There are new springs from Nissan that are supposed to fix this. I bought them, but I still have to put em on.

The penny trick stops working after a while, and if you put too many coins you will dent your hatch.

See Service Bulletin here: http://www.nissanhelp.com/Ownership/.../NTB04-042.htm

Men & Women this could not be any easier,

just hold the button for 2 or 3 seconds until the hatch pops open. Even in the cold weather this always works for me, my struts are approx 3 years old & no problems.
Save the change for the collection plate at church!!!

Installed the new springs last night, and the hatch pops open NO PROBLEMS. They are worth it to me...the two pop thing is annoying, esp. when my hands are full and it's raining outside...lol...

I bought my springs here:

I'm assuming these are sold as singles, not as pairs?

when i press my button it unlocks but doesn't even lift up...I have to physically slip my fingers in the groove and press the button and lift to get it open...would that be a spring issue as well? I have an 03 touring

have you checked under the liftgate for the springs?

The springs look like rubber stoppers halfway up the hatch. There are two small plateau-like areas on the body for the springs to rest on.

There is a Nissan recall on the springs, so any dealer should be able to get you the parts/parts codes.

It takes about twenty seconds to change them. Do that, and your problem should be fixed.

the reason you have to press it twice is because theres two locks on the latch, I was told for safety reasons. If there's not enough pressure on struts(worn out or whatever) they won't get past one or both of the locks. I have the mastergrade hatch and until they release new struts(can only use one strut), I have to hit the button then pull the hatch up while I hit the button again for it to release. I believe JTabraham(I think thats how its spelled) is selling heavy duty struts that hold up well.

Then why is it that I changed my springs and my hatch opens with one press of the release?

Gees.......just get a small tube of Silicon Grease and smear a LIGHT coating on the hatch seal after you clean (you know, the black foamy gasket.......), keep the area clean that the seal touches on the body and done...........

IT'S THE SEAL STICKING TO THE BODY that prevents the hatch from opening........

Fbody owners knew about this YEARS ago....their hatches were heavier also.
