Default Need help installing Takata Harness!!!!

Ok i am installing a takata harness right now and i want to mount the shoulder straps on the rear strut brace. For those of you who have used this as a mounting point how have you gone about doing this? I would prefer not to do any welding due to the danger of messing up my interior. Right Now i have the holes drilled into the rear strut brace (used a 3/8" bit) and at lunch i bought some taps in order to tap the holes (got a 9mm and a 10mm). Now after looking at the holes the metal apears to be about 1/8" thick maybe. I don't think this leaves enough thread for the eyebolts so i am thinking of putting a nutt on the other side. Any thoughts?

PS i have a cusco roll cage so please don't give me the roll over danger shpeel

I would think that using a nut and bolt would work. I would suggest that you use large washers on the front and back of the metal to help prevent pullout. Also, the bolt should probably be perpendicular to the strap to further reduce the chance of pullout. Just my 2¢ and I an NOT an engineer but, that would be how I would approach it in the abscence of any real knowledge of the subject.

Thanks for the suggestions. I plan on using lock washers and a flat washer on the backside. I was thinking parallel would be better since there would be less chance of sheering force, but hell i am no engineering major either. Just a lowly construction mgmt major

I guess that would work but, I would use at least a 3" washer. IIRC that metal is fairly thin back there. As far a sheer vs. pullout, my guess would be that a bolt is more resistant to sheer forces since that is how the factory bolts are anchored. We need an engineer in this thread.

that pictured method does not look safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am an engineer and I would not have that mounted like that. I would have 2 seperate areas with a welded reinforcement plate on it.

Or....buy a sparco harness bar

That won't pass tech.

Roll cage? I hope that's primarily a track car, not a street car. If memory serves correctly, the Cusco isn't an SCCA approved design anyway, but I could be mistaken.

I actually think with all the money you've spent, you've successfully made the car LESS safe.

LOL... I was thinking... is that really going to work? Maybe add an extra metal plate behind the bolt?

going to get the rollcage welded later on . I got the harness installed and i used a 3 inch washer on the backside. My dad is a mechanical engineer and i got his approval for what its worth
