Default Steering wheel mess

Although I didn't take this picture thinking about it, I figured I would ask ya'll about what's going on with my steering wheel.

It's a base edition, so I don't know why that gunk stuff is there, looking like something was supposed to be there but was removed. I just think it's ugly, and i'm looking for some way to make it look better.

That is an hit-or-miss problem with the steering wheel. There is no gunk on it. The finish is worn.

Above: my steering wheel with 59,000 miles.

Yes. The stainless steel finishers. One on each side or the wheel.

What I meant by that is that on your picture, your silver section looks flawless.

I still have no idea how to conquer this problem.

same thing happened to my 04. The "clear" finish just wears down over time.

When they were replacing my motor, I asked them about it, he told me it was gel. I was like uh no. He tried and scratch it off. I said if it was gel, it would have the same finish. He said they will warranty it and ordered the part. Have not got it replaced yet. Worth a shot though.

Same thing on my 04... only on the left side though. It isnt that bad on mine. Wonder if this is a result from resting your fingers on there when driving? I dont ever touch it... guessing maybe PO did?

Had it happen on my '06 after a trip down South to Georgia during summer. I mention that due to maybe me using bug spray, the heat, or something else made it happen. Given the quality of the part was the problem. It seems that what happened is that the 'protective' coating was dissolved. I used GooGone to remove the buildup and it made it smooth but the coating was, of course, gone. I had it replaced by warranty and now avoid touching the area.
