Since it's hard to tell what your setup is, below guide might help a little. Currently, I'm using 15 and 20 mm on my stockers (2006) and it's exactly how I like it.

Believe it or not, I used think there was trick to determing the thickness. Then I came across this and I was like, duhhh....I'm such a dummy. It's simple.

I have 25mm on my stock 17s. I'm sure you all know the specs, but they are: 17 x 7.5 F +30, 17 x 8 R +33.

The 25mms look very nice. Good enough for me. The car handles a bit better too. Go with a high quality spacer: Ichiba, H&R, Project Kics.

You must re-torque the spacers after driving a bit after installing them. At least according to my H&R directions. I think it's a very good idea.

Good luck

Project KICS spacers FTW!

I'm got 25mm (front) & 30mm (rear) Project KICS spacers with my stock '06 rims, and they look BEAUTIFUL -- flush all the way around! No issues whatsoever, whether on the street, autocross or a road course! Yes, I've driven them over 100mph on the track with high confidence! Yes, I'm a baller!

Yes, I'm lowered about 3"-4" off the ground. I've got front & rear camber kits, and my rear fenders are rolled.
