Default painting engine cover???

I've seen some pics of painted engine covers, I'm debating this over the carbon fiber cover. What paint would be recommended, as well as process of prepping through finishing? Thanks for the help.

I washed my covers very good with dish detergent and then gave them a light sanding. Smooth even coats of paint sprayed on gives you a nice even look. I used "DuPoint Vinyl Cover" paint in a semi-gloss. Good luck with yours!

Will the paint hold up to the heat of the engine? How long have you had the covers painted?

I saw this new paint... it was made by krylon, called "fusion"

donno if anyone else has seen the commercial, but its made to be used on plastic, says it bonds to the plastic on a molecular level so no chipping.

sounds like it might be well used here.

(not sure how it does with heat tho)

I just painted my engine covers yesterday. My husband and I are friends with a guy who owns a bodyshop and we also know the guy who supplies his paint. They both suggested using this particular brand and that it will hold up well with the engine heat. If I run into any problems with it, I'll be sure to post a message!

I posted a thread on this subject (complete with pictures) back in March.
Engine Bay Paint Job
Check it out. It should answer most questions.

It is still as nice as the day I had it done 5 months ago.

to ares-
watch out for the Krylon stuff- most of their paints are quite similar in formulation- they do not tolerate fuel or oils very well, and especially brake fluid. The paint will bubble up and flake off.
You really need the automotive paints from a auto paint supplier- these are resistant to the crap under the hood.

In a similar vein, the "high temperature" paints that you get at PEP Boys, or Checker or wherever- same problem- the "1200 Degree" paints just burn off... so much for truth in advertizing....

I don't know what paint the body shop used. They are a Dupont paint distributor if that helps.

i used duplicolor paint from advanced auto which is pretty much the same as the mirage paint from autozone. ive had my engine/battery/power steering covers painted for about 10k miles and there still in almost perfect condition. during one oil change the tech accidentally spilt oil on the engine cover, and after cleaning it up there was no damage to the paint. sometime soon i plan on repainting my engine cover to match my grounding kit (which im replacing cause i got the "clear" ones which are an ugly brown now), so ill post those pics if any1 is interested.

yeah, i thought that was a photoshop by someone joking around until i read the list of mods.

i painted mine silverstone...well, my shop did. they painted all the parts under the hood silverstone to match the car. then, i had the body kit done. he used the regular car paint to paint them....then he used the dupont clear coat over it (since the heat...he used the high quality kind...there are 3 different levels). or, he said you can use a single stage urethane. if the car is a metallic color...he said it would be harder to use the urethane kind (you need to use a base coat and then clear coat).

hope that helps!

Actually, in person it looks very sharp with the CS body. It also goes well with the purple grounding wires.

Thank you, Victor!
It's not most people's color, but it's mine and I love the way my engine looks!
