In that picture, the black wire is the original wire you want to tap into. It is cut in half and stuck into the ends of the wire tap. The red wire in that picture represents the additional wire you wanted to connect to the existing black wires.

BTW, here's a good link you can follow, if you're really looking to do this yourself:

For things like what the OP is trying to do, it doesn't matter what type of connectors he uses, but for other things that read the voltage (i.e., throttle body voltage readers), it's imperative that you use something the tap-in connectors or something similar, rather than cutting the wire (as that changes the resistance).
Tanner, I know I gave you a bunch of **** back before you got banned for your theads and this is exactly why. Your knowledge is so nonexistent that calling you a newb is an insult to newbs. If you do not even know what a multi meter is, then you have no business messing with the electrical system of your car. I don't want you frying it or even worse setting your car on fire one of these days!
If you really need this level of spoon feeding when it comes to electronics then please go to an electronics place like Radio Shack. They can not only give you advice but they can give you the visual that you need by showing you the parts and tools you need for the job.
And I too find it hard to believe you spent all the time you say you did searching. There is no way you went to somewhere like google and typed in something along the lines of "how to wire a LED".
