Default Diy r8 mod?

I couldnt find any on here, does anyone know a link or how to do the r8 mod? If any one has done it, im asking more what kinds of led's you used, how long have they lasted, and how to go about from there. Also, does anyone know how to swap out the 4 or 5 led's on the sides of the headlights? The ones that light up amber, I want to change them to white ones, please let me know, thanks.

Ha.. this is funny. I attempted the R8 mod and got blasted. People were coming out of the woodwork telling me there were all these guys who have done it and posted results, "just do a search".. not true. Only CinCity has attempted this. There's 3 guys on here who are wiz's with LED's but you might want to search them out for yourself. A great guy (Samr350z) told me to use these http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...377FWH1-60G-ND or pq12rd21 which would be the better option. If you use the first, wire 3 in a series with 56 ohm resistors. I first posted that 2 of my LED's were flickering.. it happened for a week, then stopped, and I now all of them are perfect without any problems. But to be safe, I'd follow Samr350z's advice.

The link you sent me, is that a pic of the led im buying? For quantity, how many do I put? 1? It says 60 in a package, so thats probably enough, so I guess I put down 1 quantity? And when you say wire 3 in a series with 56 ohm resistors, where do I get these resistors? Radio shack? And where do I connect these to? Parking lights? Im a noob and it would help if you could be more specific. Im not even sure how you wire 3 of them. Sorry, if its to much work you can just ignore my message, but if you find the time please help me out as much as possible. Thanks bro,

Steve

ZZZZZZ, sorry man. That was vague. So check this out by Samr350z, he is one of the legends on here with LEDs, plus Acree. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyeA23yjtc0

This video should get you started. You can get the resistors on Ebay, radioshack, tons of places online. I realize you're new to this, which means you merely have to try things out to get some results. Samr350z mentioned that the pq12rd21 LED's may make things a little easier, they're more expensive but I believe the resistors are built in. Then it's just about following his video, pick up a board and a power supply (my first one was the battery off a drill) and then try out a few practice rounds with solder and you'll eventually have it down better than many of the guys on this forum. So get crackin'. If you fail, you know what to change next time. But, you may want to keep your attempts to yourself, guys on this forum will eat your mistakes up and spit you out if the result isn't perfection.

Its going to be tough to really make it look clean. I've already started on an alternate set of headlights to hopefully get the presentation I'm looking for. Good luck. Keep me posted.

Not another R8 mod! It just doesn't look right on the Z. Before you attempt this do your homework, look at actual r8, a4 or a5 lights. It's all designed into the housing. It's not just LEDs thrown in there. Don't get me wrong. It can be done, but it would be a very time consuming process as you would have to redesign the light. I don't think the cincity design is all that great, that's my opinion, just some flux LEDs spaced out. Before you start drilling holes in your housing, do some serious research. I'm sure done correctly it would look decent. About the side LEDs. I took the original circuit board out and did my own take on it. Just 4 5mm amber 20ma LEDs wired in series with a 330ohm resitor. I wired it to the blinker that way it comes on and off with the blinker instead of it constantly being on. Good luck.

I agree with Prone. I'm personally not a fan of the way CinCity does the R8 mod but I think with some creativity it could be done in a way that doesn't look ... well.... stupid.

Whatever you do, you cannot cut corners and you need to make the LEDs basically perfect when it comes to spacing and application.

Definitely check out some of the actual Audi lights to get an idea how they engineer them to make them look the way they do. Here's a pic I took of a S4- hopefully it'll help you as a reference. Sorry if the size is too big, but I think it helps the most to be able to see whatever detail is available.

Looks like piranha LEDs (a.k.a, spider LED) on the Audi. I think others who do the R8 look use regular 5mm LEDs, but I've never had a close look.

CINCity is working on my 370Z headlights, and I specified SuperFlux-type LEDs for this application. Check the CINCity thread for photo upload.

Wow Digitonium, that looks like it's going to be one hell of a bright runway once your lights get installed. (referencing the cincity pics you posted)

I'm really looking forward to seeing someone come up with a horizontal rather than vertical application of LEDs for the 370. From what I can tell it's going to be much more difficult.

Thanks! Did the thread get deleted? Horizontal would be difficult since it doesn't flow well with the car. The 370Z has dimples, which is the perfect location for LEDs. It's the least tacky approach that flows from the hood line to the fangs.
