Default Rear view mirror in the way...

Anyone else finding the big honking Homelink mirror is doing more to block forward vision (and spotting apexes) than it is helping what little view you have out the back (then add the Nismo spoiler to block rearward even more)? It's been a pet peeve of mine since getting the Z.

FYI - I can't compensate by lowering the seat bottom without killing my back (lumbar is exactly the wrong spot for me). These are the stock Nismo seats so seat adjustment compensations are limited. I'm 6'0" so not a giant, but not short either.

I did do a search (yeah, a first I'm sure) and did discover a thread from 2004 that the rear view mirror will articulate upwards (remains true with the 2008) so I'm giving that a try for now and thought I'd share with the group because it took some creative searching to find it.

https://my350z.com/forum/g35-g37/795...-your-way.html

I'm curious though if there are after-market rear view mirrors that are much smaller profile by ditching the Homelink electronics? The auto-dimmer would be nice but not essential. I did a Google search on this as well and didn't find much except some pricey CF mirrors that weren't much smaller.

I imagine others may have found a more compact rear view alternative that improve forward visibility without sacrificing rearward views. Thanks!

Thanks for the link on the mirror adjustment... I am gonna run out and check mine now. I thought I had mine adjusted as far up as it would go, but even a couple of inches might help (don't they always?)

p.s. you found us over at www.conoc.net yet?

edit: My 2006 mirror appears to have a different design... the ball that the upper joint is attached to is molded to the mirror holder that is attached to the glass, so it does not offer any more adjustment. The pic in your link appears to show a moveable ball joint, but I could be wrong about that.

Did you just put up a new CONOC website? I swore I've been there before but it was just an old school static website and mentioned a gathering later this year and not much else. Now I see a complete forum site, very cool! I'll be signing up and checking it out.

FYI - I was just joking on the CF tow post (see below). Some people are a bit too obsessive, I'm not one of them (for carbon fiber)...

That looks great, very minimalist. Hard to tell the dimensions but if it doesn't have auto-dim, I'd want at least the little manual dim switch since it's not a dedicated track car. Any other ideas?

Maybe when it first came up... The guys had to get the vBulletin software up and running, etc. It morphed from milehighz. We are pretty active, and you just missed a great gathering at Garden of the Gods. Come on out to the next weekly meet, you won't be the only Nismo.

I got so fed up with my mirror at my last circuitx that I removed it completely. In order to see anything that wasn't 2' off my bumper required that I reposition myself...pretty irritating for as often as I check my mirrors. The same was true when trying to look through a corner. I can get a better idea of what's behind with the side mirrors anyway. So far, I've been without it for about 4 months and don't miss it at all.

It's probably not a solution to your problem, but I too was frustrated with the placement. I thought of way's to move it around (possibly on dash like british roadsters) but that was too low, even contemplated a rear-view camera setup but not worth the cash. Personally it's just an obstruction, and sadly there's no better place to put it. Of course, the fact that I can't see anything useful out of the rear glass in the first place doesn't help it's cause.

Thanks guy, still looking at options. Passed by a Mini and I thought they'd have a pretty small mirror, but not finding it aftermarket. Also, BMW makes a small oval mirror for the M Series. That would be kind of flash too!

No auto-dim but I believe it's possible to get it with a blue tinted anti-glare mirror.

I've been thinking the same thing. No Adjustment or bending forward helps with the mirror, its really a combination of the mirror and the rear window. You can only see cars 5 feet behind you. I've been thinking of ditching it and putting in some sort of back up camera with a LCD in the Cubby.

Would it help to turn the mirror upside down? The top edge is a little narrower, but probably not enough to matter.

I like the rear view camera idea, but after seeing this video I'd definitely want to get one with an anti-glare screen.

Maybe stop driving like a grandma with your seat in the full upright position and the mirror won't bother you.

I'm having a difficult time imagining a driving situation where the mirror gets in the way. I'm six foot, and I drive with the seat all the way back, but I can't remember ever having to shift my head to see something that's hidden by the mirror.
