Default How many of your headlights fog after painting?

Well i was nervous enough about pulling apart my oem housings but everyone said it was really not that difficult and I totally agree, it was a fairly easy procedure, I just painted my oems last week and everything was just great until I washed my car Sunday, my car sat at work all day yesterday and now my driver headlight is half way fogged up! How many of you guys experienced this problem after painting? I did run a bead of silicone around it and thought I sealed them well but obviously not What is the best remedy, do I need to open them up again completely and wipe the lense down? One of my friends said take the bulbs out and use a hair dryer to blow into them and clear them off and then just re-silicone around the whole outside again, How did you guys fix this?

Obviously, there's moisture entering the housing still. Personally, I'd take them off, take them apart again, and make sure I do an excellent quality job of resealing them. Better to take your time and do it right in the beginning than to deal with headaches down the road when you least expect it

Buy decantessant salt and put it in a cloth bag. Tie a rope onto the bag. Remove the bulb and stick the salt bag into the housing. Let it soak up the humidity. Reseal the housing and remove the bag.

So they still fogged up even after you re-sealed them? Im really not looking forward to this, I thought I did a pretty damn good job of loading the black silicone around these things too I guess Ill have to rip the front end apart since they arent getting any better and the passenger side is starting to fog too

When I bought my 350z I had the same problem. I let them stay that way for about a month. I recommend to not be this lazy. I almost caused myself a lot of damaged. The moisture was so bad that it slowly reached the ballast of the HIDs. Sometimes the driver side wouldn't light up.

My solution:
-took front bumper down
-took the headlights down
-once your remove the cap you'll notice a lot of moisture will disappear
-i used a hair dryer and just waited for the headlights to clear up

at this point the headlight still wasn't firing. i noticed that there was residue build up where the wires connect to the ballast. so i cleaned it and mixed and matched it with the passenger side headlight. both headlights work perfectly every time.

once all the moisture was gone and the headlights were fixed, i put everything back together. now every time i wash my car i place a rag over the headlight starting from inside the engine bay over the entire headlight. ever since then i haven't had any issues. i was my car every saturday morning and its been approximately 3 months since i've fixed it.

i hope this helps

But Im assuming they will just fog right up again? Another person told me to drill a small hole underneath the headlight to allow to condensation to evaporate, but I think thats a wrong idea, Im just really p*ssed off cuz my headlights look like crap!

You didn't seal the lights properly (obviously).

Take them out, open them up, and let them air out. Dry the ballast plug. Use copious amounts of black silicone sealant around the seams. Let dry. Trim the excess silicone with an x-acto knife if you want. Remember: more is better.

You can do this. I have faith in you, my padawan.

It does tend to make a mess. Just make sure you don't get any on the lens... as you can cut away the excess everywhere else once it dries.

i would say about 90% of all opened/painted daily driven Z headlights will look like crap in about a year. I've had mine done professionally to, and i'm on my 3rd set (including my stock ones)

Bottom line, they aren't meant to be opened. If youre a perfectionist i would heavily dissuade you from doing it.

Take the light out. Make sure everything is dry. Swap bulbs between your two lights. See if the bulb really is the problem.

If this issue isn't getting fixed, it's because you aren't trying to find the problem out, not because people aren't helping you.

You need to isolate that the cause is. You have two headlights. Figure it out.
