Default Electrical question

Say the max FV for an LED is 3.5v for example (not the typical voltage). If you can get it to be right under that, say 3.4v, is that ok or should I just get an adjustable voltage regulator and dial it to the typical range?

Yes, i know that. I want it to last as long as possible but with 0.1 V away from the max, would that decrease the life span of the LED significantly compared to if it was running at say 3v?
