Default Aftermarket Steering Wheel Problem

Hows it going guys? I just installed a works bell hub and a momo steering wheel on my car. Everything is working correctly, the only thing a few days after the install I got a cel light, I checked it out and it has nothing to do with the airbag/srs. Its popping up as P1564 ASCD Steering Switch, from what I understand it is the cruise control. Anyone have any suggestions or have dealt with this before?

Thank you,

Sounds like your car originally have the ASCD switches on the steering wheel, and the aftermarket doesn't. That's leaves the wires open at the spiral cable, but the ECU is looking for the switches. Hence the CEL. I'm wondering why it didn't come on immediately after the install, though.

Did the new wheel come with any instructions telling you what to do with the spiral cable? How do you operate the CC?

Yea I have a enthusiast so it does have the cruise control, but there are no aftermarket wheels and hubs that work with that. The light did not turn on right away. As far as this cruise control I have non.

The buttons on the steering wheel for the ASCD are interconnected with several resistors and only connect to two pins on the spiral cable. The ECU reads the resistance, which depends on which button is pushed, and takes appropriate action. The ECU must see a resistance which is within the acceptable range, or you'll get the CEL.

If you read between the two pins on the steering wheel that carry the ASCD signals, you'd know the resistance the ECU is looking for when you're not pushing any button.

Go to Radio Shack for the resistor, and use it to jumper the corresponding pins on the open end of the spiral cable. The ECU will see the "no buttons are being pushed" value, and the CEL won't come on.

The Engine Control section of the service manual has a sub-section for the ASCD. It will tell you which pins to look at on the spiral cable connectors.

Maybe something happened after the install to short the pins on the spiral cable connector, and that's what caused the CEL.

bmccann101, what did you do with the open connector when you installed your steering wheel?

how many resistors did you put into hub? USDM needs two 2ohm resistors. typically the works bell only comes with one.

I installed 2, 2ohms resistors and when I ran the obd2 test the only code that has come up was the one I posted about.

I have an NRG short hub and I suddenly just got this same CEL. I did install the two resistors that came with the hub from NRG. I'm thinking I'll go buy some new ones from radio shack maybe one has fried? I'll update the thread when I find out for searching purposes.

I just installed my cruise control switches in my dash. Never had the CEL before I did it.
