A good wrap can be pretty expensive.

Not sure if you ever plan on selling but I'm sure a painted car would be easier to sell than vinyl.

Other than than that it's a good idea.

gloss vinyl is a horrible idea.. its very easily damaged. you need flat vinyl.. still easily damaged, but the effect is far far far less noticeable.

Poor idea.

New paint job versus 3M vanyl on your car. The comparison and judgement should not be that hard

My budget at the moment is 2g's which my local shop quoted me 3500 for a complete paint job. I have experience with applying vinyl myself so if i did decide vinyl i would do it myself. The thought of the savings is really enticing. I just dont have experience with the gloss.

bmc will disagree with me but this is a cheap alternative. Can be reversed, Just need to peel it off like vinyl. Costs about 200 bucks if you diy.

Although the idea sounds sweet, I just can't see it meeting OP's expectations..

I'd just go with the paintjob if I were you.

Id never do a whole car.. I will however use it to do a front bumper.. its not going to hold up long in high heat on a flat surface like a hood or roof.

I wonder how hard it would be to maintain matte white plastidip.. My car is already white but just looking to mix some stuff up for fun and 200 dollars wouldn't be too much to blow. I'd leave my roof painted black cause it's already black. Hmm sounds like some fun DIY stuff. Even if it does turn out to look bad it'd be a fun experience!

Vinyl wrapping a Z is INCREDIBLY easy..... The only part that will give you trouble will be the front bumper. I mean the first car I ever learned to vinyl wrap off of was a tahoe lol..... can't get much harder than that (especially front bumper)

But heres a few things to consider:

You will have to take off everything on the exterior (door handles, side mirrors, side trim, front bumper, back bumper, emblems, etc) So if you do not feel comfortable doing this then I would not go with vinyl, as it will look like ****.

You will definitely need a second pair of hands if this is your first time, it will take you twice as long (if not longer) without a second person.

HEAT GUNS!!!!!!! (blow dryers work as well if you have a girlfriend, a Steamer is ideal but most people do not have these). You will also need some automotive sealer (like 3M) to apply on the corners of the car that will not hold properly.

Other than that all you will need is the vinyl. I would suggest either 3M or Oracal. I have worked with both and they are awesome products. 3M is a little pricier, it normally runs around 750$ for 50 feet if I'm not mistaken. Whereas Oracal runs at 550$ for 75 feet.

Remember to always order extra, as this will be your first time and you will definitely mess pieces up/not cut them the proper length.

PLZ for the love of god do not plasti-dip your vehicle!!!!!!!!! My friend did this to a section of his car to see how it would look and it did not look pretty after awhile.....

ya vinyl wrap is a great project to keep one-self busy. I have seen plasti-dip before on wheels and it looks great; dont quite agree with it being on a whole car.

So maybe flat black vinyl and not gloss black will go great for about a year until i can save money for the whole car to be repainted? How would that look with a carbon fiber top? i.e. hatch roof a pillar and hood?

I just finished a full vinyl wrap on my Z!
Just like the postings above gloss vinyls don't look nearly as good as gloss paint, but matte/satin vinyls looks real nice! If I had the funds I would paint, It would last a lot longer. Here is a link to my original post.

If it was me (and if I had the available funds), I'd rather do the full repaint and probably go with a different color (370z 40th anniversary edition paint). Vinyl wrap for me would be if my car's paint is already pretty good/top notch, and I wanna protect it and go with a temporary new look (granted if I had about $500-1k to blow on vinyl)
