Hey guys I don't post much on here but I want to share a bit of my vinyl wrap project... it has definitely been an adventure! There are so many great vinyl colours available and I know the matte black is a bit played out but I have always loved it, and since this was my first wrap, and I wanted to play it safe I went with the Oracal 970ra matte/satin black, it has the most shine compared to the 3m or hexis brands. This is not an undertaking for the faint of heart! Lot's patience is needed!! Do not believe how simple the YOUTUBE videos make it out to be lol! But the end result is still worth the trouble.
I started wrapping early February, roughly one panel a week since that's all I had patience for and time would allow. Some of the pieces where simple enough to tackle on my own but the larger pieces you definitely need an assistant for. I am not going to lie... I had to redo a couple of the pieces... Multiple times! Some of the pieces I am still not 100% happy with but the thought of redo-ing it completely stops me from being so picky. I more or less took this on as a winter project... which turned into a bit of a spring project. I still have the mirrors and front bumper to finish, but I am hoping to be done in the next week or two.
The whole car should have only cost me $500-$700 in material but I almost doubled that price because I wasted so much just learning how to work with the vinyl. All in all I think the car turned out great so far, but if I ever do it again I might pay someone to do it. At that point hopefully the budget will allow for a full paint job!

You did a great job! The edges on my car had issues during a hot day in the sun. Would shrink and reveal bits of paint. I'm going to try Plastidipping my car white next time around.

 

Wow looks great! What happens when you scratch the vinyl? Also what are the specs on your wheels? Thanks!

 

The vinyl is pretty durable but it will scratch, if so you just pull it off and re-wrap the panel!

Looks like you did a good job! I am not a huge fan of matte black on our cars, but it looks good. I played around with matte red a bit.

 

what was the total cost?

Very nice! I'm saving to wrap my car also..

 

I got the materials from a local vinyl wrap supplier.
There are a lot of online sites that sell vinyls for good prices.
Dont cheap out, make sure you get a true cast vinyl for automotive wraps.
3m 1080, Hexis, and Oracal all have great vinyl in many colors
Most vinyl rolls come in 5ft roll x 50ft it's enough for a whole car, but if it's your first time then you will definitely need more!

 

i herd that chips in the paint will show trough my hood and front bumper are destroyed from chips and bugs i dont even wash the front bumper really just everything else

 

Looks good! i'm srly comtemplating on two tone theme for my car in the future. If I were to do this on mine, I'd get like Matt Orange/Matt black or Matt white/silver

 

good job for your first time man, looks pretty damn good. Question tho, did you use automotive adhesive (3M, etc) around the corners of the car? If not the corners will start to peel and dust and **** can get underneath making it a complete PITA.

Also did you use a heat gun/steamer? These tools help to drastically reduce the time to lay down vinyl, and it is especially forgiving on those damn wrinkles.

But good choice in wrap my friend! Same brand/color I used on my tahoe

 

Yes, any imperfection/texture will show through. You'll have to get everything sanded/primed if you want it looking perfect before you apply the vinyl. I work in the large format graphic industry and I see it all the time when my company wraps vehicles, or anything else for that matter.

A coworker of mine actually is in the process of re-wrapping his Mustang and he did the same thing I mentioned above. I think he spent around $800 for the new 3M Scotchprint 1080 automotive vinyl. But obviously the Mustang has a bigger surface area (on top of his body kit) than the Z, and he has years of experience with vinyl work.

Budget will vary depending on surface area/experience/DIY know how.
