Default Plastic Engine Cover Heat Protectant Strip

This weekend I was doing some upper plenum polishing and decided to pull off the engine cover panel to polish underneath it. What I found were the little strips of cushion, taped to the panel, were dry rotted and brittle. Consequently they made nasty stains on my polished upper plenum. After removing the stains with heavy elbow grease, I decided to replace the cushioned strips. Took a drive down to my local Autozone to see what I could find.

What I found was a roll of cork gasket material for $5.99:

I already had a roll of 3M double sided tape at home, so I measured it off and cut the strips to mimic the old ones. It's an easy little DIY project. I'm hoping the gasket material holds up to the heat. Here's some before and after pics...

You know, don't know if those cushioned strips on the engine cover actually serve
a purpose.Especially for heat protection.When I had my plenum polished,I installed
a CF engine cover.I used no gasket or cushioning in the install.
Its just fine.I'm thinking that the foam strips were there for more of a vibration
insolation rather than for the heat.

I believe you are 95% correct. 95% to cut down on vibration. 5% there to not have the plastic panel touch the plenum. Can we agree on this?

Hopefully you use an abacus. We don't want any wrong calculations...

Yes make sure you moisten the strip before installation .. you always want to soak the cork and use both hands when working with it...
