Default Shift **** replacement

I recently bought a new shift **** for my 03, and i know that the locktight on the shifter is a pain in the *** to get off. I've read all the threads about removing the **** but none actually experienced the linkage breaking or having any damage. while i had my friend hold the bottom of the shifter just above the sound cushion with a wrench, i twisted the top of the **** with another wrench and eventually it twisted a bit, but i'm afraid my friend wasn't holding it in the right position and it might have twisted the whole linkage a bit or broke it because now the shifter can be pulled up and feels like it's not connected at all! I can push it down and connect it if i want and drive it since i had to drive it home. I'm contemplating on taking it to the dealer but i'd like to know if it's actually broken and how much of a fix it would be from a dealer.
