Default rear bumper cover fitment issue

I have an 03 touring. My rear bumper cover was damaged and needed to be replaced. So I demanded a nissan oem bumper cover from the insurance guy. I didn't want to deal with a bad fitting aftermarket bumper. The body shop installed the brand new nissan factory bumper and I noticed a 1/4" gap on both of the reverse lights. So the body shop ordered another bumper cover. And there it is the same gaps. So I called nissan corp and after 2 months they say its normal... normal a 1/4" gap on both lights. I asked about a warrenty. It covers defects by the manurfacturer. But nissan says a 1/4" gap isn't a defect its normal and as far as there concerned the case is over. I was told by the dealer that that bumper fit 03 to 08. A $35k car that you can't get a bumper cover that fits. Any one out there with the same problem?

Maybe you should post a pic to illustrate what you are talking about.
The only gap that is a quarter of an inch in the entire bumper area
is the gap between the deck lid and the bumper. All others are pretty flush.
Possibly the problem is the mounting of the lights not the bumper openings?

What caused the dammage to begin with?. Did you buy the car brand new?. What bumper was there before?. Post pics if you can.

Suspect there may be more damage to the rear than just slapping on a bumper if the gap is that big.

I will try to post pics later. The bumper was damaged on the driver side on the reverse light. A van reversed into it then pulled away. When they pulled away the vans bumper tore a hole about the size of a soft ball. There wasn't an inpact to the bumper. At the body shop I looked at the car with the bumper was off the car. No damage exept for the bumper. They bought a new reverse light and used the passenger side light from the damaged bumper. The gap is on the vertical side of the curved portion of the reverse light. On both lights new and old. The hole the lights fit into is too long measuered at the dealer at around 1/4". Nissan said they checked there parts and found the same issue. Nissan said some of the gaps are bigger and some are smaller. Its not damage or faulty installation. It the bumper cover itself. Nissan has admitted to the bumpers having a gap. But says its normal! Nissan said because of the age of the car an 03 (but the dealership says the same bumper fit up to 08) the part isn't going to fit correctly. And like I said nissans parts dept and there engineers say the gap on the lights is the bumper cover but its normal.
