Default Window tint: what can I get away with?

So I just bought a Black 2008 350Z and I’m thinking some window tint would be a good first modification. I live in Georgia so I know the tint laws say 35% all the way around. My question is, if I decide to go 25% on the rear window can the cops actually measure that? I mean normally they slide a device over the edge of your window right? I don’t see how they could do that on the rear window. What do you guys think?

in texas you can do as dark as you want (last i checked) on the back ones, and the fronts have to be 35%. i have 15% all around and i dont have any problems, you might have issues when you go to get inspection done though.

btw, you will love the HR... if your clutch slave cylinder goes out (kinda known for it) replace it with the zspeed setup, not the crap OEM

We don't have inspections in GA.

I'm definitely loving the HR. It only has 23,000 miles on it. I will keep that clutch slave in mind.

Correct me I'm wrong, but I don't believe GA has a law for the back window. But you are right about the sides being 35% (+/- 3%). That being said, I would seriously doubt anyone would bother pulling you over/ticketing you for 25%. I would just stay away from anything darker than 15% though.

And I've heard of devices that can measure the windshield, but have never seen one. The only ones I've seen/had experience with required me to roll down my window and they were placed on the top edge of the window like you mentioned.

if they allow 35% going 25% won't make a significant difference for them to pull
you over.

Yea. Think that all you want.I live in NC and I actually just left the DA office for getting my tint ticket dismissed. I got pulled over specifically for tint. Mine registered at 23% ( factory 2% and aftermarket 25%), I removed it sat... it sucks but Im not paying a $290 ticket. Plus I don't know how your inspections work in GA but here they are not supposed to pass a car that is not within code ( 35% on cars all around in NC), so think about that too.

It appears to be 32% in GA now. Even on the rear window. I just found this website:

that sucks, last time i got a tint ticket was when i had my truck approx 5 yrs ago, i had limo (5%)all the way around, the ticket was only $120 so it was cheaper to pay the ticket than to strip it off and get retinted

Have you thought about putting on legal tints? That way you won't have to worry about getting ticketed.

X2

OP it just takes one cop in a bad mood to pull over a two seater to see what ticket he can get out of it.

I'm almost positive that in Texas 25% is as low as you can legally go on the driver's and passenger's side windows. The rest you could paint black if you wanted to. I have 15% on my sides and 2.5% on the tiny windows and back glass. Never had a problem.

I have considered doing legal tint all the way around, but I'm not sure that's going to be as dark as what I would like. That's why I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to go darker in the rear. It's weird, people are always just staring at me at red lights and stuff. I mean it's a nice car and all but come on it's not a Ferrari.

Is your interior black? Reason I ask is with a dark interior, the windows will appear to be darker.I have a all black interior and you could barely see in my car with 23%. I'm getting mine re tinted to legal. Its to much hassle.

I would say don't tint if you are considering doing legal limit.

I hate tints that you can see right through, looks very girly.

In NY the legal limit is 35% on the back windows, 70% on the side windows and no tint allowed on the windshield. With that being said, I have 15% all around at 50% on the windshield.

If I could do it all over again, I would stay with the 15% all around but do 35% instead of 50% on the windshield.

I LOVE DARK TINTS!

I have 5% all around. I did it myself so I figure if I get stopped I'll just pull it off and re do it. I've had it on for a few months and have never been stopped.. *knock on wood*

But I'm in Mississippi.

How hard was it to do? I was thinking about tinting my B13 myself, figured I would try it on my beater.

The interior is black. I will probably just go legal up front (32%) and maybe 28% or so on the rear window depending on what the tint shop offers. I think I will do a 6 inch visor strip as well. That should cut out a decent amount of light.

It's not hard. Just don't use the cheapest tint you can find. It will turn blue. Anyway, all you have to do is get the window completely clean then trim the tint to fit. Remove the plastic cover from the film then Spray applicator spray on the window and tint film then use a plastic putty knife or bondo spreader to scrape the air out. It's cheap enough that you can try a couple times if you mess up.

I live in Texas and I run 5 percent all the way around. The only way you will get pulled over for dark tint is if the cop is next to you. If you see one coming up, simple, roll the windows down. I had 5% on my last 350Z as well for 2 years and I never got pulled over for it, just be smart about it.

Exactly. Another key is whether you are doing anything else illegal. Since my tints are so dark, I chose to keep my front plate on the car since it is required in NY. If I didn't have tints I would have taken the plate off a while ago. If I did both then I would just be asking for tickets.
