Hardwiring a GPS in the Dash Cubby
You wont be able to do that. Most cig lighter power cords have fuses and other voltage and amp limiters inside their housing. Open up yours and i'm sure you will see more than just two wires, but a circuit board.
You can go to radio shack and buy a female cig lighter and hardwire that into your car, hide it behind your center console, and plug your gps cig lighter power cord into that if you want.
That's what I did for my dash cam.

If you hardwire a GPS device in your Z, it’s important to keep the device’s power plug (what you plug into the car’s “cigar lighter” 12v power receptacle). You can do this by purchasing an inexpensive power receptacle (a couple of $’s) that you use in-line with the device’s 12v power plug.
Why you need to keep the device’s power plug intact:
1. Devices use different voltages (5v, 9.5v, 12v etc.) that are negotiated by the power plug. It isn’t always 12 volts, and some devices are eventually ruined by powering with the wrong voltage.
2. The device’s power plug typically provides protection against power surges and shorts that could damage or ruin the device.
3. The power plug might have a “chip” that provides additional features for the device.
