Default Driver Side Door "grip" - Area with power window buttons.

For whatever reason my 2008 350Z with 26k miles has one major interior blemish, and that is the Driver side Door "grip + power window switch plastic/rubberish cover piece.".

It is this piece:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/350Z-POWER-WINDOW-SWITCH-FINISHER-LH-2006-2008-MODELS-/251377688943?_trksid=p2054897.l4275
That one says for interior color code "g" -- I have no clue what my interior color code is,.. the piece just looks black to me. VIN decoders don't tell me,.. any ideas?

If I had to guess any Carbon Cloth or Charcoal Leather Interior is trim code "G".. , But I'm not sure.

Also,.. is $80 overpaying for this plastic piece?

This is literally the only part of the car that is blemished and man it's scratched to hell and back.. so definitely replacing it. $80 feels like Nissan dealership pricing.. but if that's the cheapest it is that is what I'll pay. Just curious how can I find the right "color code" so it matches my black piece I have already -- and if anyone may know a cheaper place to get it.

Anyone know the part number on this thing?

Thanks!

The easiest and cheapest is to put a thick coating of Plasti Dip which mimics the feel and the look of original rather closely. Another way is to wrap it. I looked for a new replacement but the price made me look for an alternative.

Even simpler and less expensive fix is to go to Walmart craft area and get some flat black acrylic paint and some small brushes for about $2. Clean the grip area, carefully apply two coats of paint, and you're done.

The paint dries without showing brush marks, it's more durable than the original finish, it's easy to touch up if it ever needs it, and you don't need to take the door apart. I did mine over a year ago, and it still looks pretty good.

Your post is a common problem.
Did you do a search on the fixes?
Here we go AGAIN.You could paint e'm ,PDIP etc.
Get new ones..Whats gonna happen? They will get scratched again.
These were just not done well by Nissan from the start.Just another way
to offer the 350 and you'll get a lot for the $$$.
WhaT i did is install carbon fiber covers. They have a tough coating, same as used
on exterior parts--spoilers/ilps.
Mine have ben on my Z for over 4 years.Look brand new.
Furthermore,if you have someone riding in your Z,thats gonna be the first thing
they will notice&compliment. The cost is higher. You get what you pay for.

I would like to know that too. How do you determine which color is for your car?

Makes sense. The one you linked isn't rubbery like the one I have from the factory that is scratched up? Seems price is about the same as Ebay..

Good to have a link elsewhere though, appreciate the advice.

Here we go AGAIN.
I do a search, multiple searches.. on every issue I have posted on JCITY. Just because the search engine doesn't turn up pages of previous owners with the same problem .. I honestly can't help. Part of the problem , I think, with search on this problem is what do you call that piece? It's not the driver door handle.. It's not exactly a window switch because it's the grip to open and close the door from the inside. Search didn't net me much.

Plus, my question was specific.. I asked about perhaps where to find it cheaper, and what the interior color code was for my vehicle.

You could paint e'm ,PDIP etc.

Now that's some good advice Jcity -- Carbon fiber blends well with a black interior.. Happen to have a link to what you used for the driver door? I'll pay a little more for something that won't scratch up again.

Default Same thing in my 08..

Hey Chromatic....

My 08 did the EXACT same thing...I finally got feed up and replaced it with the OEM one (black)..

I've had the new one in now for about a year or so and it seems (knock on wood) better...

I think the new ones are made better and hopefully will last ...hopefullly..

No one was able to answer this.. I think most people just went with what looked right online (unless they painted it, etc). Which I think is fairly safe to do.. this is what I was able to scrounge up regarding interiors of 350's.

http://www.nicoclub.com/articles/ima...2z33color1.JPG

Essentially if you have Cloth seats, or dark "charcoal" leather seats your interior color code is "G".

If you have "Frost Leather" seats.. your interior color code is "K".

And if you have "Burnt Orange" seats.. your interior color code is "R".

I'd assume interior color code "G" is by far the most popular/populated of all the 350's combined.

Hey Deals!

I see it's a common problem.. the prev. owner,.. when I asked did your dog chew up your interior door handle.. just said.. I don't know how that got like that to be honest. Which leaves me to believe just your grip, barehand,.. on that removes paint over short periods,.. although it looks like rings, or metal objects made marks all over it.

You say you got OEM one -- The ones listed aftermarket and on Ebay are "OEM".. did you buy yours from Nissan directly,.. or go get it online for $80 like these other ones are priced?

JCITY: I'm interested in that carbon fiber one.. unless the one piece is $200 or something..

But, I'll def. go OEM if the paint/finish it corrected and doesn't wear off like the factory one did.

-----------------------

On this... Changing pieces like this on other cars hasn't been a big deal,.. and certainly didn't need me taking the whole door panel off -- Someone mentioned it required taking your whole door apart. Does it really require taking the whole door off (inside door panel) to put this window switch/handle cover" piece back on as replacement?

All cars I've dealt with.. for pieces like this,.. it's either a screw or two,.. or,.. you have to be super careful and pry/pop it out of it's slot -- Not so careful if you are replacing it with a new one..but often held in with clips.

Since JCITY said this is all over the forum and I missed it.. there must be a billion posts on people removing it and putting it back on? Maybe a simple howto considering the commonality of this issue?

If there isn't a "how-to" I always start making them as I fix and modify my cars in these forums.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

1) Thread moved to the correct subforum

2) This is a common issue with the 350z, especially if you buy it used

3) Be careful with being OEM parts off of ebay, sometimes vendors improperly list their parts

4) You should always reference Courtesy Parts for any OEM parts:

http://www.courtesyparts.com/80961-f...14_715_846_857&

The "G" that you are seeing in that listing is for the Grey

5) Just buy the OEM replacement, as long as you don't wear rings or keep your keys in your hand it won't be an issue vs trying to repair the OEM

Color code here says "X" -- lol. And it's model 06-07 -- That's an odd model year range.. I though the last few years of the Z's were redesigned a bit and had a little more horsepower.. This piece you linked fits 2008 correct?

This piece is from a Dealership? Looks like it.. I know Nissan Dealerships charge you an arm and a leg for parts -- Bought a replacement Sunvisor for my 300ZX from Nissan a long time ago and it was $200.. blew my mind.

Fair enough.

Looks at the link,.. shows top and underside of the piece -- It looks as I suspected,.. held in by clips. Removal of this piece doesn't require anything special or anything like removing the door panel completely like another user had mentioned - Seems like you literally remove this piece its self by prying in the proper clip areas.. Then put the new on over top.. and press down and it snaps into place.?

Am I right?

Thanks for the help.

You're welcome..

Anything for the 2006 model year and above are all the same thing, you just need to make sure you get the right color code

Now that you have the correct part# you can more easily search ebay and or Amazon or your local dealership for the exact part.

It's held in by nothing more than a screws and I believe is clipped in (if I recall correctly) and should be a 5 minute replacement as shown in this diagram:

Thanks guys..

But,.. apparently the 2008 (and maybe the 07 as well?) are different than previous years.

The handle and window switch piece don't have that bottom screw -- Instead on these years the grip for the inside door handle (on the window switch panel) has a complete hole through it.. So these DIY's don't exactly apply to my 2008.

Have yet to find a 2008 DIY, but am still looking.. Not quite sure why they redesigned the handle/switch .. but they did slightly.

I took some pics of it to show you how it has a hole through it and is different - and doesn't have that screw at the base of the grip like the older models do.

and

I felt around this thing.. didn't feel any screws etc.
