Agreed, the silver nitrate system, which I'm guessing this is, had been around forever (it's how most mirrors are coated), but the difference now is that kits are being marketed at the consumer level. I'm waiting to see all the chrome Civic's.
Interesting that you posted this. Spaz stix has some really good results and I'm thinking about buying an extra plenum and sanding it smooth then spraying some "chrome" on to give it that polished plenum look, then again at that point I'm better off polishing it. Still think it might be good to try though.

The surface needs to already be smooth to get that mirror finish, so if you polish it, the chrome is a bit superfluous. A different luster, perhaps, as polished aluminum looks different from chrome, but both will be highly reflective. How about a polish and clear powder coat, for the best durability?
