Default GTR shift **** on A/T 350z

Im wondering if anyone has tried to mount a GTR (R35) shift **** on a 350z with automatic transmission? I saw a partial thread where someone mounted a GTR **** on a 370Z, but the shaft was too long and needed to be shortened. http://www.350z-uk.com/topic/74678-g...b-on-370z-7at/
I particularly like the black edition **** because of the red leather and black **** looks quite striking.

Also, the GTR **** is shorter and much nicer looking than the OEM 350Z ****. The GTR **** is pricey though - about $300.

Any thoughts or comments?

I found a thread on the 370z forum about some guys who said the GTR **** fits on the 370Z with no mods. It sits up high so some lowered it and some left it and installed a shift boot. http://www.the370z.com/exterior-inte...-7at-pics.html

An option is the later G37 **** which is less expensive and not bad looking.

Anyone anyone? Im picking one up today so ill find out, but id rather know now

GTR **** fits on the 350z but Ill need to modify the piece of plastic that sits on top for the shift lever. Under the GTR **** is a hole which accesses the top button of the ****. The existing plastic is too small to fit through there. It looks much better thn the original ****.

If you can get it to sit an inch or two lower, it would look way better. Even then I think it looks a bit out of place.

One could cut the shifter and rethread it....

Its not threaded. the **** is held in place by a clip. The bottom trim of the **** is removed and the clip is pulled out and the **** comes off. In order to lower the **** one would have to cut the shaft at the top and make new grooves Lowertown the same distance as the amount that was cut on top. It can be done but take some precise work. I think just making the shift boot is probably the best option because it's very easy and would still look good but admittedly it would be nice if the numbers lower by about half an inch to an inch

Nice idea, but I agree that it need to seat much lower to look as cool as gtr's...
Don't waist your time on a shift boot! If you've spent 300$ on a **** - then go ahead and make it seat proper!!!

Fortunately I didnt spend that. I bought it from a guy on the gtr forums who removed the **** after driving the car 200 miles. Lower the **** and making the shifter work properly is very time consuming and risky, if I cut too much material. however it would look somewhat cleaner with the **** lowered much like the GTR so I may go this route anyway

It would take less than 30 mins to modify the shifter with a dremel...

Well, perhaps in an ideal world. I have read an extensive thread in the 370z forum and the G35 forum where modifications were made to the shift mechanism with a dremel in order to get the shifter to work properly. Each person indicated it took the better part of a day to get it right, but in the end they got it right. One guy said it wasnt worth it, and one said the work was worth it.

From what I have read, and from a cursory examination of the GTR **** and the shift mechanism, the center rod, which moves up and down to allow the shifter to be shifted, has a plastic piece on top which needs to be thinned and shortened. Also, two grooves need to be cut in the outer shaft in order for the clip to hold the **** on. The risk, is cutting too much, so the cutting and sanding has to be done incrementally. Nevertheless, this is probably the direction I will go, and of course Ill keep you all posted.

No need for cutting in increments. Measure how much lower you want it, cut that much off the with a pipe cutter, cut an equal amount off the center rod and notch the sides with a dremel.

Sounds like those guys were overcomplicating the mod.

Here is an MS Paint cop showing what the shortened shifter would look like:

Figured it out. I chopped the outside shaft an inch and took a half inch off inside shaft and put a piece of plastic on the end.
