Default aluminum center pieces

so i just wanted to put this out there. i have been looking at refinishing my two aluminum center pieces on my 2004 touring edition. every forum i have been to says that these pieces are plastic. this is only partially correct. i took apart the steering wheel last night (props to all those write ups i found) and removed the cruise control switch from the right side. sanded down the clear coat and lo and behold, the fronts are aluminum. any ideas on painting? i kind like the silver color, so i thought about sanding and refinishing and then applying a new clear coat. any thoughts? i'll throw some photo's up when i get home. do not try and use vinyl paint as it does not stick (i have had to sand it again after i tried, kind of a dur hur moment ).

My topcoat was thinning, so I just pulled them and removed it with a little acetone. Better than new.
