Default Top tonneau lid doesn’t pop open

2008 350z noob here with a top issue. I’ve searched the threads as well as google and can’t find the specific similar issue. When I press the CLOSE button to put the top back up I can hear the actuator click but the top cover doesn’t spring open. I can hit open and close multiple times and the last time I did this it did pop and thankfully I was able to put the top back up and lock it in place. I’m deathly afraid of putting this top back down for fear (reading other posts) that it will lock in place making any kind of motor or switch very difficult to access and replace. When I was able to trigger it everything worked beautifully. Didn’t stop or cutout went up like it should. Also went down like it should without any issue. I’m thinking based on all the threads that the actuator release either isn’t functioning correctly enough to fully unlatch or that it could be a cable on this piece that’s stretched not allowing it to fully release the latch? Or possibly the lock mechanism is binding? Any thoughts would be very helpful!

also, if I slightly raise the cover to access and replace what ever it is, I do plan to pull the 5 th bow actuator and have the brushes replaced. Does the cover have to be fully down when I put the actuator back in or can I install it with the cover partialy raised? Reason I ask is I see from pics that there is a toothed wheel that engages the two arms. If I put it in while raised will the wheel be out of alignment or do the other switches and sensors tell the wheel how much to travel? Thank you in advance!
