how do you get the shift knob off!
ares ... you must have an EARLY 03 !!! They used lock tite early on ... here's the easy how-to ...
Pop up the plastic around it and clamp the vise grips on the shaft so you can leverage on the shaft.
Use an old acc. belt or crank belt and wrap it around the bottom (silver part) of the ****. Clamp another vise grip on the belt.
Hold the vice on the shaft and don't let it move. Turn counter clock on the vise on the ****. Being the belt is rubber, you will not scratch the paint and have good grip. You may have rubber left on the ****, but it comes of real easy. Trust me, the boot is worth it !!!

I finally got my shift **** to come off too....but i had to go through hell...wen to the dealer and they couldnt get it off..tried it myself for 2 hours and couldnt get it off and f*cked up the shifter shaft also..the top shaft with the rubber spun loose so i couldn't bare that my shifter shaft was scratched up from the wrench so i went out to get a short shifter. THen went to the mechanic and they had to take apart the whole shifter to take off my shift ****. Now i finally have a new Nismo shift ****..and a Rogue short shifter! pretty happy now...but i know how it feels...
It is probably true that the earlier production Z's have a "pint" of locktite because some people have no problem and some go through hell just to change a shift ****!!!
