Default how do you get the shift **** off!

I hate this car, I swear.

trying to replace the shift boot, and the **** is like friggin welded on.

I understand Im supposed to clamp down on the rod below. great, but its covered in rubber, that wont push down.

clamp around the rubber, doesnt matter cause that thing aint moving.

I may not be a big guy, but I can open my share of pickle jars. this aint happening though. it is counterclockwise to remove it right?

very carefully

actually, i dunno ... a few of my friends were able to get thiers off, no problem, either by following those directions or by working the **** left and right, we believe it's locktited down. so you sorta need to break it lose, then it turns pretty easily.

i bought a nismo shift **** over a year ago and it's still not installed

yeah Ive given up. Im pretty much afraid Im gonna break the shaft or something.

as it is the ***** got chewed up through 2 layers of thick towel thats how hard we were clamping.

Im borderline at needing a new shiftknob because of all this crap.

at the very end it seemed to be wiggling about 5degrees back and forth, but no farther in either direction. Im not even sure which way is off. just guessing counter clockwise. I could be tightening it for all I know.

Ares, counter clockwise is the correct way to get it off. It is very hard to do as the bottom half of the shifter is rubber (or some *****) so it just twists.

Whenever I have taken mine off (quite a few times after some hassles with a qwik shifter) I didnt clamp down the shaft at all.

I just wrapped some duct tape and some towell, used an adjustable wrench and turn the shifter. It does take quite a lot of force to get it off the first time.

Dont let (if possible) the shifter twist as this will wreck the leather on your ****!!!!!!!! And, no one wants wrecked leather on their ****, do they?

As always

I wound up taking the whole shifter off and doing it on the workbench.

I know what a ***** it is to get that thing off. I didnt even bother.
I had mine changed at Performance while I was having some mods installed.

It was nice to get the car back with new cats and a NISMO GT shifter.

My stock shifter sits on my desk as art

I replaced RE short shifter and Nismo GT Ti shift ****, along with new shift boot with leather stitching.
Right, it's a little ***** to take it off, but it wasn't that hard to me.
Try to use Vice Grip (did I spell it right?) to grab it and turn it. It will definitely scratch the **** so put a rug around it and then put vice grip on it, and turn it. It'll come out.

P.S. I just read your another post and realized that you used the exact method I stated above.
Hmm. It didn't come out? Mine came out fairly easy tho... weird...

ok clamp the rubber... right below the shift **** under the boot is PERFECT. clam on the rubber it will be ok. Then take a towel and wrap the towel around your shift ****. Get a pair of channel locks (works perfect) and grip the lower, towel-wrapped part of the shift **** and holding the vise grips and channel locks simply turn the shift **** off. It really is easy, but I had someone else turn the **** with the channel locks while I held the vice grips on the shifter.

Same here... got my shift **** awhile ago and it's still in the box. Kinda comforting to hear that the great Ares is having problems with the **** (one of the reasons for my apprehension is the stories that I hear about this stubborn ****... ).

The instructions indicate to use radiator hose to clamp down on, but I'm wondering how much it is to buy a small snippet of radiator hose for this application (surprisingly, no one here has seemed to use the hose technique yet...).

When I first got the car, mine was tight. The whole shifter would twist when you tried to turn the **** it was so tight. I kept playing with it at stop lights with my hand and finally one day it just broke free.

I got a quote from my dealer......$40 to remove, and the **** "would be ruined." I figured I could ruin it myself for free.

I used vise grips on the shaft, with a second set of vise grips on the towel-wrapped ****. PITA........the **** eventually broke in pieces to get it off.

If you think you might want to go back to stock someday, either forget taking the **** off or buy a spare one.

Yep. I had to ruin mine to get it off. I was pissed. BTW....That rubber does fold down. The nut that actaully threads onto the rod is at the top of the ****. Once the **** decentigrated, I was able to heat it up, and it came off. I think some people have more loctite than others.

I used the rubber hose technique and had no problem with two sets of vice grips. Get big vice grips.

I used a towel and it resulted in ZERO damage to the stock shifter... was simple
