Why Add a Wing to a Car That Understeers

theres no arguement here about wings usefullness I dont think... we all know wings CAN help.
the thing is, as much as it pains me, we are not driving an F1 car, and on the average track you not likely to take a turn faster than maybe 60mph; at which speed, your downforce generated by a wing is going to be minute. maybe 25-50lbs at most. no doubt, few here are experienced enough racers to even truely drive the car to that limit. and for those that cant take advantage of every drop of performance that gives, youd lose more than you gain in drag on the straights.

My comments are about racing, not street. None of my posts above ever mentions street. If you guys have a problem with me contributing some inteligence to this thread and actually answering the question asked and being on-topic, I might do what every one else seems to do around here and it's post puke smiles and comments about GT wings and keep every one happy.

From the responses it seems clear that rear wings degrade the corner handling of the Z and slow the top end speed. My next question is why are owners changing to 19 and 20 inch low profile tires. Even with wider tread width, this seems like this modification degrades the corner handling performance of the Z.

nokidz, where did you come to that conclusion? Read some books about aerodynamics first. I think what you are looking for is the word AID? Besides the only argument agianst my comment is that no one knows how much downforce it generates since they are no specs. Show me how absence of a pice of paper degrades the performance. I've never heard of a wing degrading cornering ability of any car, unless some one has mounted it upside down. And why do people go for 19 and 20 inch wheels, because they want th BLING BLING.

My point regarding the wing is that a stock Z naturally understeers. When a wing is added it provides more downforce to the rear wheels, increasing the rear grip and making the car understeer more. To improve handling downforce would need to be applied to both the front and the rear.

so if ppl like me going to reduce lets say 130 kg off the car, generate more downforce at teh rear will be somehow important.

its very simple nokidz in general a spoiler and 19/20s are ricer mods to use a generic term. they serve no functional purpose other than looking cool. 99.9% of car drivers either are not able, or simply do not use this car to its full abilities and thus do not care one wit about understeering or how much downforce a wing adds. with that said may i ask if you plan on competitively racing your z in some form of high speed racing which requires the car to perform flawlessly?

ill install a wing and 19inch wheels (10.5 or 11 wide, heehee)
why? because i want them, and i can always borrow a set of 18s for the track.

I have 19s and out corner ALL cars that show up at the local meets. Even a nismo and I still have an open diff. I know 18s would be better in corners and straitline but 18s look small on the z!
