Default Issues with new Mastergrade CF Hatch

Hey guys, I wanted to post up some pics and possibly get some advice from people with aftermarket body panel experience to figure out what to do.

3 weeks ago I called up Mastergrade and ordered a carbon fiber hatch for my Z and when it shipped 2 weeks ago they charged my credit card. It was a little frustrating because the tracking number I was sent never worked at the website, but today it did show up at the body shop.

The packaging was superb, the shipping time was OK, there was just a lack of communication. And when it showed up the guys at the body shop unpacked it and discovered a series of scratches and smudges in the clear coat and one section where the carbon fiber is cracked UNDER the clear coat.

I think that some of the light scratches and the smudges can be fixed, the swirl marks should be able to be taken care of, but a lot of the deeper scratches are likely there to stay unless the whole piece gets re-cleared.

Overall I am disappointed having paid near $1,000 for this piece and it came in the condition it did. I would have expected this condition from a previously used piece, but not something brand new.

Tell me what you think should be done...

Here are a couple more pics.

Also I should mention that it is very difficult to take pics of scratches with a cheap camera under bright flourescent lights in the shop, but everything in the pics that looks like a scratch or defect IS. We wiped the dust off, so everything shows up.

By far the worst part is the series of five 3-inch cracks near the rear of the passenger side of the hatch near the "wing".

I'd like to mention also that the guys at the body shop suggested that the scratches looked like they were done in the manufacturing process.

Do a lot of CF parts show up like this?

Personally i would have gone with Seibon...

Doesnt suprise me in the least that you have been douped by MasterGrade, their 'banned' status on this site should have sent up a couple red flags.

Its gonna be a b*tch to do, and prob take a rediculous long time before you see a replacement/refund, but send it back and demand a replacement/refund.

I hope that 1k you spent included the rear glass and install...

The $1K price tag covers the part and shipping.

For one I am very excited you received the piece! But all in all looks pretty nasty, if you send it back you may never get a replacement in return. We were a dealer for these guys and we are still owed quite a few pieces ;(

all cf pieces should be inspected before you sign and receive. i thank god i did when i got my shotty asuka v1 hood. i unpacked it, looked like crap and sent it back. m1 gave me the run around on the refund. called my cc company disputed and oddly enough a few days later m1 issued my refund.

call your credit car company today. send the hatch back with a tracking number. dont ever buy another mastergrade product again. they are a bunch of thieves.

Like many have said, sending it back is going to be a *****. They will first tell YOU to file a claim with the shipping company and that alone will take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month to file. Then comes the wait of them actually sending you another one. If you paid with a credit card I would file a claim immediately and hold the funds until the situation is fixed.

Ah...

But still... I dont know the price point for the Asuka replica, but im assuming you paid $900 with $100 shipping, or somewhere around there?

That still seems high for a Mastergrade knockoff...
