Default Aluminum Roll Cage possibility

Hi all,

My friend who owns a mercedes clk said something about aluminum roll cage and showed me a manufacture that actually have this product. As a mechanical engineer student and already took metalurgy, i really doubt the safety of aluminum roll cage. Can i have some input on this topic, so i can get a better sleep at night. Thanks!!!

I've never took any metalurgy classes, but I can tell you that an aluminum roll cage for any other purpose than show would be useless. An aluminum cage wouldn't pass tech inspection in any form of racing.

That's for show only.

Being the old f*rt that I am, I remember the factory built Porsche race cars from the '80's came with Al cages. US race organizations didn't approve of them, and they had to be replaced with steel cages. I think they were the Group 5/Kremmer 935's, but my memory isn't that good.

If Porsche thinks Al is OK for cages, that would give them some validity.

I would pass on one, weight be d*mned!

And I would also pass on a carbon fiber cage.......or harness bar for that matter.
