Right, it's part of the newer version of VBB, there is no way to turn it off.

No, not anymore. I haven't noticed it anymore. I just don't like the extra step it takes to get the full image pulled up. They old style was one click on the attachment, and the full image was pulled up. Now you click, it pulls up the thumbnail attachment solo, then you have to click again to get the full attachment...

The way I usually open things, whether it'd be links or pictures, is by mouse wheel clicking on them. In both FF and IE, if you press the 3rd mouse button, it'll open whatever it is you clicked in a new browser tab. I open bunch of pictures and links that way and navigate through them one by one.
