This guy is crazy haha did you not see how bad he pulled on the evo from a rolling start the evo didnt have a chance. Plus like they said the track is only 1/8mile long. Give the 350z the other 1/8 of a mile and he is passing the guy!!! AWD is cool but more problem. Why do you think John Shepherd (fastest Eagle Talon turned his AWD to RWD)

350zer, from a roll, I can pull on the Evo all day long...up to any speeds. We've demonstrated this before. ANY high powered AWD car is going to jump off the line against a high powered RWD car on street tires.....I assume you realize this. The race really begins as you try to real him in.....and I am capable of doing that.
Yes, but the reason you can do so is not because he is awd, but because he has minimal mods. He has about $2,000 dollars worth of mods. I think the point 350zer was trying to illustrate is that while TT Z's are fast, they are very expensive. Similarly if an evo was to get a larger turbo/fmic/fuel, the closest equivalent to twin turboing a Z, he would be all over your car - both from a roll and a dig.

I'm not degrading your car. You have a very impressive ride, I'm just simply stating Z's are alot of work/money to get impressive numbers out of, and the fact that you have done so makes it that much more impressive.

But similary, it as just as impressive that evos/STi's with half the amount of money to turbo your car can put similar if not more power down. And with similar power be deep into the 11's on street tires.

Um...just a reminder that the guy runs a 12.5 or so in the quarter mile. To get his car into the 11's is going to take thousands more dollars. He has also spent about $5K on his car...you guy are forgetting the clutch, and lots of other goodies. Modding an Evo is not cheap either.

Also, dont forgot that you need segreate power mods for other mods. I tried to build my car in a balanced fashion...suspension, wheels, tires, brakes, etc...things that dont necessariliy give you more power. I broke out my engine mods....and it added up to only $$14K including labor. Not too shabby if you ask me. and the 14K inlcudes all the new stuff in my sig, including built bottom end, new clutch, and enough stuff for 600whp. That should put me in the low 11's.

We've been there before... similarly, stock Civic with mods will put Evo to shame for the $$$ invested. Comparing performance with money invested -- did someone call that rice racing or something? I forgot the term, I apologize.

In any case, I've actually thought of this objectively. Here's the bottom line: AWD is good as a traction solution. However, how many times can you use it before something breaks? Are you actually going to drop-clutch @ 5000rpm every time to get a kick out of it? I sure won't. If I'm rolling, and I decide to punch it in gear, I want to be pinned to my seat. I want torque. Z is not the most torquey, but for the purpose of this comparison, it will suffice. You punch the Z in any gear and almost any RPM and response is right there. So, you are relatively happy with baseline (stock) feel for your 90%+ driving experience. Plus, as a bonus, car will park in VIP spots and look as though it belongs with that SL500 or 645Ci. So, you choose to spend more $$$ so you can mod this car (instead of Evo) and have both looks and performance. That was my reason, hope it makes more sense to those who feel Z is a wrong choice.

John Shepard did no such thing. Why would he give away the best advantage in the 1/4? http://www.shepracing.com/sr_dragtalon.html Take note of the part that says "// JOHN'S 91 EAGLE TALON AWD//"
Sorry but I am a DSM Tuner so I felt inclined to share what I know.

12.5 @ what mph? He may only be running 107-108mph with some good driving to get a 12.5 while you are running what? 12.8@114mph? So of course from a roll there is no match. His mods are nothing compared to your TT Z. He has a full exhaust, an intake and a FMIC that does nothing for an EVO at his stage. Lets just say he's prob at 280-290awhp on pump gas.

To get his car into the 11's is going to take thousands more dollars. He has also spent about $5K on his car...you guy are forgetting the clutch, and lots of other goodies. Modding an Evo is not cheap either.
Not thousands. Cams, a good tune, race gas and more boost will do some justice. All cars are different but an EVO can do 112-114mph with those additions. BTW that takes less than $1000. BTW, yes it is cheap to mod an EVO, just all depends on what brand you want to go with. Unlike a 350Z where a forced induction kit is easily $4000+ .

Would be good to match you up with an EVO in the 400+hp range like your Z to see the results.

Good kill and nice death.

99allturbo what is an evos stock boost? You have to rembember the rule of thumb for 4g63's 1lb of boost = 10hp. So I am curious as to what a 22lbs evo should roughly have.

Also I don't think this is a fair race at all. The evo will kill you out the blocks. You hunt him after. You get some slicks that would likely be a close 1/8 mile. However if he gets 416hp. He'll more than likely get a taste of the 11's. In my opinion the 350 doesn't stand a chance against an evo in a line. But thats not what the 350 was built for anyway.

I wasn't trying to either. I agree, it just wasn't the right cars to be set up. The EVO had much less power than the Z.

Regarding the 22psi, NO EVO holds that boost if set to 22psi. I set mine to 24psi (my setup is different than this EVO) to have it settle to 20-21psi at redline. From my experience, local EVOs to me and those on the net are in the 280awhp range with the mods on the EVO in the video. Some can be in the 300awhp. It's all in the tune and what is being used (ie, piggyback or standalone).

NA vs. Turbo as far as modifying, of course the turbo'd car is not going to need as many upgrades...usually at least.

I had an HKS Stage V+ Mitsubishi GSX all wheel drive. My car was what the EVO evolved FROM, ha. Yes, my launch (with a much better than stock clutch) was very impressive and very easy to do. All I had to do was drop the clutch at 5000 rpms and I got consistent 1.6 sec. 60 ft times. I'm sure that when you get your ducks lined up, you can do the same Sharif. Get a couple of extra rims just for drag racing. Mount a couple of BF Goodrich drag radials on them. You should be able to get at least 1.8 sec. 60 ft. times. And you will eat up that Evo then. Just mount the drag radials every once in a while for drag racing and then remove them afterwards since you are mostly a road racing guy. Think of the drag radials as an emergency contingency plan for just that situation. With MT ET street slicks, you could launch 1.6 sec 60 ft. times just as good or better, Sharif. Try to race the Evo in a full qtr. mile where your power will have a longer time/distance to pull and produce results. An eighth mile is mostly a drivers/launch race.

I know my HKS Ecliplse GSX was not exactly an Evo, but for what it's worth, I like my 350Z a LOT more as an all around performance car. I like the much better throttle response and low/mid range torque coming out the other side of curves much better with my Z car. The power is just always there without having to wring the engine's neck like you hate it as I had to do...with my Mitsu (rhymes). And that limitation is still present in the EVO as well as my GSX. (I had a highly upgraded turbo that was probably very close to the response of the current EVO)

And I love the way the handling and suspension are set up much better in my 350Z. The first time I test drove a 350Z, the handling and ease of handling just won me over and that was it. It just feels the way I want a performance car to feel. But that's just me. To each, his or her own. But the Eclipse GSX was a neat little car for the money.

Yea you can lauch at 5K as much as you want, but when **** starts braking u wont. AWD doesnt have as much as advantage as people think. Most AWD guys stop launching so hard after the realize they keep braking things. I got plenty of buddies with AWD 4g63's

Gosh, did you even read my post? I said I "had" an AWD Eclipse and have a 350Z now. And I said that yes, the AWD Eclipse did launch hard, BUT the point of my post was to give my opionion that our 350Zs can launch just as hard if we get it set up right. Then I went on to explain my opinion that our 350Z '60 ft times are just as good or better with drag radials and MT ETs if necessary. i.e. what I was saying IS that AWD is not as big an advantage as some people think and I posted some obvious ways to launch our Z cars just as well. Which is what your post said...

Having said all that, I owned and raced my Eclipse GSX AWD for 4 years and made hundreds of launches like that with no drive train problems whatsoever. Other than getting the much stronger than stock clutch as I stated. I was good enough in the Eclipse to win the Buick and Turbo Racers Club of America 1993 Spring NATIONALs Turbo Drag Race. As well as many many local drag races not just in the trophy class but up in the professional Class II category as well.

But as I stated in my prior post, I own a 350Z now and much prefer it to my Eclipse... That and the fact our Zs can launch just as hard was the jist of my post.

What I said about my HKS Eclipse GSX turbo AWD being what the Evo evolved FROM was a joke. Couldn't you tell? I know the Evo does not trace its chassis linage directly from my Eclipse. But the engine and drive train of the EVO DID evolve from my Eclipse turbo AWD's. From the website you provided, "Mitsubishi engineers started with (the Galant ) VR-4's proven drivetrain and shoehorned it into the lighter, smaller Lancer chassis and the Evolution I was born ". The Galants VR-4 turbo engine/drivetrain WAS the same drivetrain as my Eclipse GSX turbo. The Galant was the sedan version and my Eclipse GSX was the sport coupe version of this same AWD turbo engine/drive train.

I worked part time as a second job for a major turbo performance center during the first half of the '90s. The same people that were helping me work on my car and building my turbo system also were building the twin turbos for the 300ZX TT in the Dallas Grand Pre and were setting class records at Bonneville in the AWD TT Mistu 3000 GT drive train. We modified dozens of turbo AWD Eclipses and Galant VR-4s. I was sponsored in racing by this HKS Pro Series Dealer and won many drag races including one national turbo drag race. I collaborated with the Archer brothers. Remember them dominating in the early '90s with this same drivetrain. For a while I had the fastest Mistui AWD turbo in my state. I know of what I speak.

"Learn a bit more" ? ... ha. That's a good one. You are quoting from things you read about on websites and written materials about all this. I bought my Eclipse brand new in Jan. '90 and LIVED all this... and raced with this engine/drivetrain in competition when all this came about and was happening... Except that my highly modifed Eclipse turbo engine with 400 hp to the wheels was far more powerful than any stock Evo. Want the Turbo and High Performance magazine issue date with the article that documents my winning the national level drag race? I can also give you issue dates of newspaper articles about all this. To read and learn a bit more...

I also have the Turbo magazine issue date of the Bonneville class records, but that was in the Mitsu 3000 GT AWD drive train. That was not my car, but it was prepared by the turbo performance center where I worked and where my turbo system was built.
