Default Refurbishing my turbos-HELP!?

so, they found shards of metal in my intake manifold, my tuner has not closley inspected my turbos as of yet, but is suggesting to have them refurbished with new bearings...said that would cost about $300/turbo
any feedback so far..ok, i'll continue...
any comments on the necessity of this?
if i do send them in to get new bearings, is there any upgrades i can do to the turbos? (i've heard of changing out parts from an 18g)
any additional help/recommendations is very much appreciated ASAP!
also, i need to get some other goodies ceramic coated while its out...

also, the good new continues, i'm one of the lucky few with head damage! so, instead of ordering a shortblock, i just ordered a longblock (heads as well)--the motor is being shipped to me tomorrow off of an 03 that had less than 10,000 miles on it before it got rear-ended into oblivion.

so, the ticket price just keeps going right on up...wooohooo!

A word of advice to all you out there contemplating going firced induction: build the motor at the same time!!!
for those of you who are STILL running, good luck, you must have had the strong batch of internals (and i'm sure a good tune helps as well)

lastly, my tuner said with the arp head studs, removing the heads in the future would require pulling the entire motor..so i think i'm gonna throw in some stiffer springs as well while my motor is apart...i ahvent touched my ECU yet, so i'm either gonna get it reflashed now or a few months from now...i know the stiffer springs allow me to rev a bit higher, safer, but with the stock ecu rev limiter cutting off, it defeats the purpose as of now...

i think i'm done sharing/venting my current update!

LASTLY LASTLY: does anyone have arp main studs that they would be willing to part with like now....i have some on order and will send them to you as soon as they get here 1-3 weeks from now...i would pay a little extra and appreciate it a ton if someone would be willing to send me their main studs so i can reassemble my motor sooner than later, i'll pay you, then the other studs will be sent to you and you can buy them back for cheap...PLEASE!!!

That sucks. I'm thinking about getting a vortech but keeping pretty low boost and not getting internals. I guess i'll have to wait around and see how some other people do. Good luck with the rebuild

Kyle from SGP can chime in, but they designed their head stud kit so the heads could be removed without removing the motor. I forgot how they did it....

They have allen stud holes brouched into them. You can remove the nut and washer and use a allen wrench to remove the studs. It is just like removing the head bolts.

Just like these:

ok..great!
does anyone have the main studs..i'm going out on a limb here, but a distributor for arp told me to send dig pics of the main studs and all the dimensions and he'd compare them to studs for other makes/kits and see if another size stud will work...do u think this is possible?

I thought that once upon a time , but was corrected. The ARP head studs have "allen heads" and can be removed in place. Care must be taken though upon replacement to make sure they are not bottomed out or binding though.

If they are putting in new bearings they will re-balance the whole assembly. They should check the vanes on the wheels as well for damage. If they don't check they should spot any problems when they do the balance.

See if you can trace the true origin of the metal shards in your intake manifold. Its very rare for metal fragment from a turbo to make it past the intercooler.

If there was metal in the intake manifold, it would have came from the other direction...from the engine, not the FMIC. The IC, like you said, would make it very difficult for metal pieces to make it through the vanes.

Please, someone has to help Todd out with there main studs. If you are planning a forged internals project, but not anytime soon sell them to todd. ARP has a big production coming out so you won't be left out in the cold. I mean, Todd and I are essentially trading out engine parts as necessary just to get both of our Zs back on the road. Help a fellow member out...

my understanding is that the exploded piston fraGments went out the exhaust manifolds and then they have the oppurtunity to play with the turbos..the metal in the intake manifold, as i understand, gives the assumption that the heads have some damage- the fragments of metal went through the intake valves??? is this right...i don't really know the mechanics of this type of engine failure, but my tuner seems to be pretty convinced one of the heads is toast (hasnt been pulled off yet)...i ordered a complete longblock anyway...so EVERYONE...i'll have extra parts for sale if anyone needs them, after the rebuild, i'll give an itemized list of what's up for sale...definately a couple of heads..posibly two rights or two lefts, maybe a crank, and some other goodies!
