Default APS and higher boost ??

What is required for the APS kit to be taken to 12-14 lbs of boost....wastegate spring, boost controller, etc ??? Or can the Unichip piggyback be programmed for this boost increase? Just curious.

Just the unichip software and a good dyno tune. The wastegates are internal and dont use a spring like external wastegates. Instead a solenoid pushes open/closes the gates. The pair of stock internal wastegates on the APS should be good for my goal of 650rwhp and not boost creep for the life of the turbos.

another neat benifit of the APS kit. You dont need to spend $500 in an e-01 boost controller/programmer.

So the tuner can set the boost level in the Unichip at which the solenoid actuates and bleeds off the excess boost?......sweeeet

Yep.

The only down side of this is you will need the Unichip software and a laptop/good PDA to adjust boost, say for street or track use. I think there are aftermarket boost controllers that could work like the E-01 for our apps too.

I guess the real question is how far can you take the APS kit before the fuel system needs upgrading.

Out of the box the APS TT fuel system can flow up to 600 flywheel hp, after that you require the APS Tall Boy plenum which has six additional injectors built into it which can take you to 900hp.

I haven't gotten to this point yet , but apparently the basic Unichip controller allows two maps to be Flashed and selected via a switched lead. So it should be possible to lslect betwen two maps , a street map and a strip map for example. Each map should provide two totally unique boost , timing and A/F profiles.

Probably in the neighborhood of 500whp before the system would need upgrading. Keep in mind that APS rates their injectors at 3.5bar instead of the industry standard 3bar pressure. so the injectors included in the APS kit are really the same size as the 440RC's included in other kits. And I have seen guys get 450-500whp on the 440's. The APS kit probably runs slighly higher fuel pressure to compensate...nothing really wrong with that that.

Its all about getting the proper balance. If you go too big on the injectors, you have start, idle, and drivability issues...etc. So foftentime, you have to compromise, for a street driven car. You might have to go one size smaller than optimal, and just run higher fuel pressure at boost.

Yes APS runs a higer 58 psi (4bar) differential fuel pressure (1:1 rising rate reg).

hey sharif
could you elaborate on what you are planning on doing with your tune?
i know you said you were gonna put different wastegate springs, then fine tune boost with the e-01?
what else goes into your tuning process?
i'd like to shoot for 15-16 lbs for a month or two, then retune for 20lbs...are you doing it in stages or all at once? what do you plan to do for your break in?

I will install the 11.6psi wastegate springs, which is an effective 10.5psi when FMIC pressure losses are counted for.

So 10.5psi will be my new base, vs. the 8.5psi that I am running right now via boost controller.

Phunk is planning on helping me tune the car via pressure sensor, rather than MAF voltage...a much more elegant and accurate solution for the big boosters. I hate to set targets or goals before hitting the dyno, although I am shooting for 550-600whp. If you put a number in your head, sometimes bad things can happen on the dyno as you push to acheive your goal . we wont realliy know until we strart tuning it, and how the car responds to the boost and tune. Tuning will be done on a laptop using the Greddy Support tool, since the e-01 is a bit combersome to tune with. If everything goes as planned, we'll have the car at 11:1'ish at 20psi and 600whp. Phunk is the master of tuning with the eManage.....makes me look like a grasshopper.
