Hey Charles, sorry I haven't really caught up with your WIP. That last I recall was that you had a built motor ready, but was still running on the original motor. Have you taken apart your original motor and make any observations?

Just a note: The high silicon Arias pistons they make are good for 20-25psi of boost pressure, according to Arias. The zero silicon pistons they custom make are good for greater than 25psi of pressure. My guess is 25psi will probably get you pretty close to 650-700whp.
I know I read this somewhere, but what are the disadvantages of zero silicon pistons?

I think they make noise when they are not heated up or something.... or they expand more...

The disadvantage is that you have to run slightly larger piston to wall clearances to compensate for the extra heat expansion that zero silicon pistons will encounter. Zero Silicon AL is 15-20% stronger than low or high silicon pistons, and they generally hold up better to extreme heat and detonation. They are NOT bulletproof...just stronger. As a result of the larger clearances, your engine will likely have some piston slap when cold, which cold result in reduced engine life. You really wanna warm up zero silicon pistons prior to getting into the gas pedal.

That's the primary reason why we recommend high silicon forged pistons for most street applications. They sound just like stock at idle...even when cold...assuming they were properly installed, and the cylinders were bored and honed correctly. They should be good for 20-25psi, with adequate cooling and tuning...although the stock head isnt going to work at 20-25psi.

Sorry for the semi-hijack.

why won't the head work at high PSI?

From my experience...the head will not physically flow enough air in stock trim to support the power at 20-25psi. At minimum, you need to open it up with a cam, and maybe larger valves.

It's good to know there are several folks tuning stock headed VQ's so we can see where everyone nets out. My dyno reads a bit low, so maybe 550-575 dynojetted whp is possible.

been cruising the car... got 80 miles on it. as soon as I build some confidence in the sleeve job im gonna start full throttling it.

Funny, the ATS Twin Disk with 1350kg plate is a very nice feel and grabs awesome. Its still very easy to drive and I am not ********ting when I say that right now as I type this my 53 year old mother is out driving the car right now and hadnt stalled it once since i talked to her.

I guess I spoke too soon....the ATS carbon clutches are "mom-proof".

Charles mom is no normal mom. She is some sort of super mom. 1 time I was @ the shop and she actually yelled at him to go race his car..... How cool is that.

For those who are wondering, the ATS 1350 Type R is not mom proof. I know GQ got the soft type, and if Charles' mom is driving the car, it must be the soft type too. I don't think stalling is so much an issue as the grabbiness in first gear.

So Charles.... warm idling with the cams? Any issues at all???

I stopped by the shop yesterday to see the finishing touches on the motor, and was hoping to see it start up...but I'm glad he got it started today. Hope the sleeves don't sink on ya charlie.

A customers car with these cams was idling pretty good and rarely would do anything wierd with the TS reflash.

For my car I went the route of the Consult-II 250rpm bump. My car is having some problems, but I got some ideas and if I get around to it I might put them in action tonight. I will tell you what fixed it when I get it fixed... playing with this car in my spare time I got toooo much else to do right now. A couple other guys want THEIR Z's back! But either way, I think I have a good fix.

I was having a problem with it, but I just fixed it, shes purring at a good 950ish RPM and does not die or almost die on rapid engine decel. Lets chat soon so I can tell you what I did. Its a very simple change in the FCON settings.

On the ATS clutch, the one most of us got was the "standard" pressure plate, which is 1100kg....that one appears to be mom proof, but still good for 700whp+. The one that tig got was the heavy pressure plate at 1350kg, and from what he tells us, its a bit too aggresive for mom.
