i feel like saying I told you so about it costing more than $500 for labor of doing internals.

I mentioned SGP racing and their prices seemed really reasonable to me - especially since they just ship you out a block and you're ready to go. Then just ship your stock block back...

the other thing is who really has experience doing internals on this engine? Few shops do. I'm not not going to trust something like that to someone who's never done it before and is guessing about some things or assuming things. I'd rather go with a shop who does it on a regular basis and stocks all the needed parts.

SGP racing even does ceramic coating to the pistons.

the other problem with doing internals is downtime. Unless you have a second car you're in trouble.
I tried to get a SGP Short Block but they didn't have any so my only option would have been to send them mine first and have them build that up which of course takes a long time
So i decided to go TT before doing internals next year with hope that they will have the parts and of course that my engine will survive until then

i here ya...i'm gonna build a second motor by the end of this year..have a fully built bottom end, ready to go...sitting in my garage...
i figure, if i need to cash it out--sell it to someone in great need...but keep it for myself as a security blanket--takes about a week to swap out blocks...vs... 3-4 months to gather all of the parts...awww those dreaded bearings!!!

This is the route I took. I went with the ultimate short block for $3900. I sent them my block and turnaround is 3-4 weeks. I feel I am in very good hands with SGP.

How much is shipping though...not to mention actually taking it out of the vehicle? Also what is a safe amount of boost you can run with this setup and whats the maximum boost?

I still have not got my shipping bill, but booger had his shipped for $150 from SGP. He paid $85 to send his block back. It should be less than $300 there and back. As far as labor, my shop is going to charge me $1000 to pull it and put it back. It is a 17.5 hour job by the book, but they are not charging me book time. At the most mulitply 17.5 by what your shop charges.

What about boost level? If you cant go higher then 12psi.. then would it even be worth buying the built block already? Cause i mean.. i can do the same with just pauter rods, pistons, and head and main studs at 12psi.. and be much cheaper, prob like 4300 w/ install max... where as the shortblock for 3900 + 1000 for install w/ the same amount of boost. Plus i dont even know if id want to go higher then 12psi... wouldnt i have to upgrade the fuel system and new injectors. which = more money.

I don't think there's anything from stopping you to go higher than 12 psi...it's just a matter of tuning (besides having an engine that can hold it)
the APS kit is supposed to go up to 700whp after that you'd need to upgrade the turbines and I believe the fuel system...anything above 430 whp I would strongely suggest to get the upgraded internals. So if you want that much power you need to get some work done

APS fuel system is only good to 12lbs of boost. You will need their new plenum/injector system to go past that.

Ya the fuel system and injectors would need to be replaced.. and i dont have that money right now, so 12psi would be my max.
But what is the max that you can do with the Ultimate Shortblock from SGPRacing?

Default Update

I just spoke with the guy who is installing my APS TT system. If APS had written a rave review of their own kit, I can't imagine it being any better than what I was just told.

In contrast to some other TT kits (no names allowed), everything fits perfectly, every bolt is sized to the exact length it should be, everything is plug and play (not one soldered wire on the car).......well, I could keep going but you get the idea. Nothing has to be tweaked, cut, or finessed. He said that if a Nissan mechanic were to see this system on the car, he'd ask "When did Nissan start building twin turbo Z's?"

Needless to say, I'm extremely pleased so far, not only with the kit, but with the professionalism of the people at Dyno-Comp.

For those waiting for the ST system, if it's anything like this kit seems to be (and I'm sure it is!), you'll all be very pleased.

APS delivers the goods for sure. Any word on when its ready to feel the heat? I'm curious how the kit will tolerate the desert.

I did ask about that, and they said that other than the fact that it might be down a bit on power during the smouldering summer months, it should handle it just fine. It's really not even hot here yet......still another month before the oven really starts crankin'.

The car is being dynoed today, and I'm scheduled to pick it up on Saturday. The 300 mile drive home should be fun.
