Default Clutch slipping

Just upgraded to Exedy Hyper Single Carbon Clutch and I have about 450 mi on it. Seems that the clutch is slipping like crazy when boost hits. Any suggestion on what the problem might be? Is there a break in period for this? Anyone else get this clutch with similar experience

I'm sure there's a break in period for this clutch..

I have an ATS dual carbon and that slipped on me in 3rd and 4th a few times at < 500 miles on it.. scared the hell outta me because I hit the limiter hard those times... I have about 1500 miles on it now and hasn't done it since..and the manual does state a break in period..

Hey Jorge..

I think i had a piece of paper that said to take it easy for 300 miles.. can't find it now LOL.. It also stated some weird procedure for warming up the clutch before drag racing or something like that..

The clutch started feeling different at around 600-700 miles for me.. seemed a little more grabby (if that is a word)and solid

Cool thanks for the input. I guess I have to take it easy for a few more miles. I thought I was alone on the slipping thing. Scared the **** out of me as well when this would happen. If you happen to find that warm up procedure, can you please post it, thanks a lot

Default Clutch slipping

Hey guys, I have the same problem with mine. I find that you need to slip it a bit in order for it to warm up and then it grabs. It's kind of a PITA and scary sometimes but I got used to it. This clutch is really meant for the track where its running hot all of the time. It's not very good in the cold.

Hope that helps!

you always have to break in a clutch by going easy on it for a couple hundred miles, so no drag racing for u this weekend.

The carbon clutches MUST be warmed up prior to hard usage. Even a hard pull in 4th gear can cause them to slip if not warm. This has happned to me once....most of the time..no slip.

Once you warm up the carbon disc, the friction is unbelievable, and the bite is very hard. Once warm, the carbon will not slip. That is how they are designed. Carbon slips when cold, so you can make a nice clear street start, but at the track, you warm it up a bit, and they grab like mad!

Im so glad you 350Z guys know the do's and dont's of Carbon Clutches!

You guys are dead on that a carbon clutch needs heat to hold power - it's just an inhearant property of carbon clutches.

We recommend - three, five second, "slips" of the clutch, withen 20 seconds before a drag race or "full power" run. Kinda inconvient I know, but it's a small sacrifice to have F1 technology on the street.

If you guys have any questions about Exedy clutches, or clutches in general, feel free to ask, shoot me a PM, or e-mail!

As for "break-in", I recommend 500 miles of city driving. The target is really 200 1st gear "engagements" of the clutch - so highway miles don't really count 1:1.

Yea, ive had the same problem. My ATS twin carbon has been in and running for 3000 miles so far with FI. It slipped on me 2 times when i was cruising and then decided to make a mad dash. I thought i had improperly broken in the clutch and the metal was warped but now im leaning over to the fact the clutch just wasnt hot enough.
