I am quite sure it is something that is cast in place when the pan is made. When the leak test it I am sure they paint mark it to say it has been tested against oil leaks. I just picked up another low mileage spare motor yesterday.
I have pics if someone can post them...I just need an e-mail address to send them too.

Any idea WHY it would be there? Having trouble finding a reason that he shouldn't just weld it shut.

On a side note, if you followed the "Sir Johnny Wispit" thread, he tried to weld his upper pan, and the weld wouldn't take for some reason. Ended up having to replace the upper pan, which isn't in anyway an easy task.

Yeah, that was their native size. I figured I'd leave 'em that way to give people as much clarity as possible. You think I should shrink 'em, or does this get the job done?

that ball is a plug that is put in place after the oil galley is drilled into the upper pan... if it has came out my only guess is that you stretched the hole its in when you tightened your T fitting and possibly cracked it like i did... mine cracked from the boss the T goes in all the way around to the gold ball and i poured oil from all around that area.... Turbonetics sent me the upper pan at no charge due to the T being 15 thousanths bigger than the pressure sending unit (the reason it cracked). BUT i still havent got it put on and my car has been sitting FOREVER now... Turbonetics said they are gonna pay to have the pan put on which is GREAT but they want me to bring the car 11 hours to maryland (Altered Atmos.) and thats just not realistic for me right now.

Sir, thanks alot that explains a lot of it. Im pretty much screwed? How hard is it to install the upper oil pan? Did turbonetics mention this in the instruction? That explains why I heard a crack when i tighten it for another rotation. Any one can think of another solution to this?

Like I said earlier....if the pan is cracked you have an issue. I would tap the hole and put in a short bolt with grey sealer. Try it because at this point you have nothing to lose. Replacing the upper oilpan is not a small job. You might be able to get away without removing the front timing covers but to do it right they have to come out in order to get proper gasket sealing IMO. In short....either you drop the front subframe out of the car to access the pan or lift the motor out to do it. Some will argue that you can do it in the car....but with the limited space and thre importance of getting the pan square to the block and rear timing cover, I would not feel comfortable doing it that way. Someone else had this problem as well with the Turbonetics kit. T-netics was going to cover the cost of having AAM replace the pan for the customer.

Did you run the supplied tap through the oil feed hole before you installed the tap?

Could he seal up the hole and get an APS oil pan to run the line into? Seems like a good option since replacing the upper oil pan is such a PITA.

After reviewing all the posts here, I would say assuming that you didn't actually crack the upper pan, you could just put a short bolt and some gasket maker in that hole (carefully, so as not to crack the pan). That ball isn't supposed to move, so bolt or ball, as long as it's plugged, it shouldn't matter. If the ball won't press fit back in there, you've got nothing to lose.
