Default Oil sending unit leak

Just did my own oil change and a couple of weeks later I noticed a 1/4 quart oil loss at the dipstick. Looked under the car and found a steady drip-drip from the oil sender unit while the engine is on--where the unit screws into the pipe fitting supplied by Vortech. Tried tightening the unit but the leak didn't change. Is this usually a sign of a bad unit that needs replacing or do I need to simply remove it and use teflon tape or pipe dope? Has anyone had this problem?

take the stuff out an examine it. look for stress cracks. if its all good, clean it up really good and reassemble with teflon.

Thanks for the info. I assume you're talking about cracks in a plastic housing--not something metal. When I take this thing out, will oil be pouring out behind it--i.e. do I have to drain the oil out of the oil pan first?

i have had similar things happen on other cars. usually it is the plastic separating from the metal base. even had it leak through the center where the connector hooks on. i would wipe it down good and then start the car and try to find out where it is coming from exactly, then fix what is needed. if it is just starting to separate or loose it's seal, most of the time you will not be able to visibly see it. good luck

i was saying to check for stress cracks in the brass fittings, as I have known people that had those fail before, probably from over tightening. Just look for cracks everywhere while you have it out, its a small part anyway.
