If under $5000, use small claims. Other wise, how much are you willing to spend? $250 -$650 per hour is ballpark for a decent attorney.

it will likely be in small claims, but because i'm not local to that area, i think i'll need an attorney.

i'd just like to get a recommendation from someone or find a method to choosing one beyond the dart at the proverbial dartboard of the yellow pages.

File a claim with UPS, your stuff was shipped insured.

As the receiver, you cannot directly file your claim with UPS (thank you DHL for THAT lesson) - the vendor is responsible for that.

You can file small claims from your venue and serve the vendor if necessary. However, since your claim surrounds a a damaged intercooler, send it back to them and let them review the matter further as suggested on the other Board. $40 in shipping is a LOT less than litigation and hurt feelings.

i didn't do business with UPS. i have no claim against them. the vendor can and has pursued a claim with them. since i am not UPS' customer in this case, i am not privy to the results.

any recommendations at all for a chicago-land attorney?

Ive just read this topic on the other site. I cant post their because of my email addy. I can see you point about the IC. There is nothing between it but a carboard box. When I opened mine I was shocked! Im sure UPS didnt cover it for that reason. No bubble wrap just cardboard. Let me tell you, those boxes are fuggin heavy! Im sure some UPS guys tossed that thing around! You would think APS would wrap it up a bit better.
