need some engine advice
since i wired my WG shut, and been hitting 17-19 psi, it really feels pretty good. im thinking about buying a built motor but im wondering if its a smart move. im thinking about buying SGPs basic short block, and using my heads, etc. im thinking about doing the labor, motor pull/ install. i would be looking for around 500-550rwhp, or as much as i can get out of the stock aps fuel system, i dont want to start upgrading everything. do i need to upgrade cams, get headwork, etc?? also, i dont want to spend all this money and run my single turbo out of its efficiency range. id like to spend ~3k (2700 for the motor from SGP plus misc stuff) and swap the heads, put it back in, dyno 500, and be happy. any thoughts, sharif?
Wait, your running 17-19psi on a stock engine! Holy crap. How is that holding together. Please clarify

haha, i have my wastegate wired completely shut, im getting a new heavier actuator made by forge motorsports to fix my boost drop issues. with the wg wired the turbo spools like a ****. the max ive hit so far is 18.6psi. of course i dont hold it there, i let off immediately when i see anything over 13. but i have held it at 13 before, but that was with my boost drop so it would go to 13 then slowly drop down to around 5 by redline. no boost dropping anymore! i hope the new actuator fixes it, im gonna use the 9-15psi spring.
I think it's a smart move, building your bottom end. The heads and all that, that's your call. You can easily get more power if you do the head work and cams. Your turbo obviously is capable of putting out some pretty serious power, might as well be able to do that all the time, safely. I think your estimate of $3000 is a little low though, even if you're doing the labor yourself....these things always seem to find a way to sneak in hidden, unexpected costs.

Anyway - I'd also go with the built bottom end.
U know how much I've bounced around between going built or staying w/stock internals.
U might check with Steve ( Zimbo ) & see if he still has his built long block available. His buyer ( of a month ago ) backed out & he emailed me 2 days ago as I was #2 on the list but I've already gone off the deep end with the AEBS block.
I also concur with the others to cams. This would be the PERFECT time to do it. Check with JWT on their S2's over the S1's. They tell me that the S2's have less duration & overlap so they work better with turbos while the S1's R what I'll have with the Vortech. BTW - the Arias HD pistons should be back from the coater & on their way to AEBS by the week's end. Still shooting for a mid-January install. Last edited by Mean Gene; Dec 8, 2005 at 04:00 PM. i do agree with you MIA, and failsafe, but i dont know if i want to pay another 1200 for 20rwhp, i know the gains are there but at that level, dont know if the gains are worth it. hmm, decisions, decisions.
gene, i did ask zimbo but he had another potential buyer before me also. you went with an AEBS sleeved block? OMG! that is awesome. you gotta let me know when you get that thing back together.

Brett - Yep, we just kinda pass parts around on these sites, don't we??
It's Gurgen's old block that he's had O-ringed by AEBS to fix the coolant leaks. The rest is my signature.
How far is Birmingham from Fair Hope??
I might be down that way to help out on some Hurricane Katrina repairs on a few of our ( Shell ) platforms.
Not saying I'll be coming in my baby but ya never know!!

Tig, it sounds like your goal are a safe 500whp, and nothing in more. In which case, the only thing you need is pistons, rods, and studs. You can leave the heads completely stock.
FYI, we do short blocks for $1300 labor plus the parts of your choice. For your needs, I would suggest Arias Standard Duty pistons $750, Eagle rods for $575, and ARP stud kit for $380
