Default FI questions from a FI newbi

I want to straighten out some basic information:

- Superchargers control their max boost by controlling the drive ratio and turbochargers clamp their max boost using a spring loaded check valve to atmosphere (BOV)?

- On both a SC and a TC a boost controller, such as a UTEC, can monitor the boost level (MAP?) and by using a second seloniod controlled valve further clamp the boost depending on conditions such as RPM, AFR, etc.?

- Is it possible using the UTEC on both a SC and TC to have one of the maps set to a very low boost (0-1 PSI) and keep the gas mileage to a reasonable level and other maps for high performance?

Thanks

Turbos don't affect gas mileage unless you are under boost. I get better mileage, i average 30mpg freeway cruising from bayarea-socal for the 2 trips i made there.

ok, many thing to go over here. yes, s/c's control boost via gear ratios, but turbos do it mostly by the waste gate. the bov is designed to just vent extra pressure in the intake so it doesn't back up into the turbo, or compressor housing. pressure can be done via the bov, but mostly by wastegate nowadays.
a boost controller will target mostly only the turbo. the s/c will control boost by the gear ratio in it. the boost can be monitored via a boost gauge, but on an s/c, you will not have control over the boost if you want to boost less than what the gearing is wanting. there really is no reason to limit boost on a s/c for the vq35, as boost comes on pretty late in the rpm.
you will be pretty much set to one map with a s/c set up. unless you carry around different pullies with you. you can run a different timing and fuel map if you know you are going to be running race gas or something though. the different maps are mostly designed for upping boost on a turbo set up.
now, a bov can be set up to work as a wastegate on a s/c set up though if it is designed to.

No.... on the BOV. The turbochargers maximum boost is controlled by the wastegate.

The UTEC is a piggyback computer not a boost controller. It does contain a boost control funtion on TC cars. But it is a piggyback ECU taking control of the engine from the factory computer when the car is under boost. The UTEC cannot control boost on a SC car as that is controlled exclusively by the size pulley installed. Boost on a turbocharged car is soley controleld by the waste gate and the sweight of the spring installed inside. On sophiticated system such as one where the UTEC controls boost the wg is controleld by a solenoid getting signals to open and close from the UTEC.

- Is it possible using the UTEC on both a SC and TC to have one of the maps set to a very low boost (0-1 PSI) and keep the gas mileage to a reasonable level and other maps for high performance?

As I said above SC cars boost is controlled exclusively by the pulley installed. There is no need for a low boost MAP on a turbocharged car because if you are not on boost there is no increased demand for fuel. It drives like a NA car.

Thanks

one more thing. in order for the utec to control boost u need to buy a solenoid, this does not come with the turbo kits, but usually comes on most turbo cars from the mfg. the way the kits are set up is using spring loaded actuators in the waste gate set to a certain psi.
