Does FI beat just getting a faster car?
yeah, compared to an otherwise stock Z, a used Z06 would out handle, out brake, and outlast a FI Z, not to mention have an easier time making use of the power it has. A peak hp number is just a number, but track times speak for themselves.

A Vette or Porsche is more than just an engine. You fail to mention the reliability factor in your 400whp Z on it's stock motor vs. the reliability factor on the other two cars. Or things like suspension, brakes, cooling, driveline, traction. Honestly, to build a reliable, properly tuned, properly performance balanced F/I Z similar to the proper balance found in a Vette or Porsche is going to cost you about $70,000 to $80,000, if not more, including the cost of the car.

If your not rich, I would not buy a porsche. They are rich man cars, like Benz's. They are not practical or reliable. People get them to flaunt their status mostly.
If I were you I would stick with a Japanese car, even a fi z would be cheaper than a Porsche to maintain.
Im waiting to see how the new Supra/Skyline come out

Also i dont look to replace my Z with another Z. That would be almost like starting over. I do not believe a new gen Z would offer a huge improvement in power for my car. The suspension is already very nice. The only thing that would make me buy a new Z is a better/more rear ward weight bias and markedly less overall weight. The Z doesnt have much space to improve without stepping on the GT-R's toes.
There is also timing involved in my car considerations as our resale will shoot up with the release of fast and the furious 3. It will be the perfect time to sell a modded 350. Especially one like mine with ultra yellow and nismo rims/exhaust. It could easily be a posers dream.
I would jump on a Z06 in a sec if i could find one at $60K i would then get the APS kit for it and have a 700 RWHP daily driver.

Yeah then thats my next move no doubt. I figure like you i can sell my Z to the FAST and FOOLISH for about 30-35 (im at 500+RWHP) and im good to go.

he said including the cost of the car
yeah though it would be that much for a well balanced machine that can stand up to FI for long track days etc in the same way a stock Z06 can

Some of you guys are seriously dimented. For one you can build the Z to outperform almost anything on the track and the price tag for car plus everything is going to be less than $45k. Get real.....70 to 80k????? I have my car completely built with TT brakes suspension, wheels tires....etc. You take my car to the track and have the same driver drive it and a Turbo Porsche and mine will win all day long.
Second, Porsches are expensive to maitain, but not becuase they are not reliable, simply becuase they are German. They will run a LONG time without any problems.
As far as the ZO6 is concerned, why would you spend(possibly) 60k on a used car and then make it FI which is going to do the same thing to that engine as making the VQ FI as far as reliability. You put an extra 5K into my car and it would be good for 800+ whp. Some people do not have all the facts when they say things on this board. I know I do not, but I do know for a fact that you can do more with the Z than with most other cars for significantly less than those other cars!

You must have paid like 5 grand for your Z then if the 45k you mentioned included the price of the car. People spend up to 40k just on the Z alone..

I think you underestimate the powerband of a turbocharged Z there buddy

not at all, but I think people underestimate having a big brake kit and some wide sticky tires and an LSD and being able to run the car hard like on a road course and not have stuff break or overheat

yeah people must be thinking of used base model Z's or something and not new ones. If you're going to mod the car that is the way to go probably.
are we talking a built engine or not? I'd for sure say a NA vette would be more reliable than a FI stock engine Z...
I am not sure about Porsche, but I know most other German cars are not as reliable as Nissan. My friend was a parts manager for Nissan and was board out of her mind (since all they turned was oil filters). She now works for a BMW/Mercedes dealership, and every part turns there, and they charge a whole lot more for parts!
As far as when you FI a Z, yes it is not going to last as long as a stock Z. But, will it last longer than a Z06 - only time will tell.
I think it comes down to what you like. Me - I drove almost every production car out there before I bought the Z (Porsche BoxxerS and Turbo, Z06, RX8, STI, ..). I bought the Z because it was rated high for reliablity, it performed really well, its price was right, I loved the look, and I HATE big cars.
BTW - they need to fix the Z06 manual transmission - I bet I can shift 100x faster with the Z than the Z06! And that keyless start and you have to put the car in reverse to get out is the dumbest things I have ever heard of. And the vette doesn't feel like 500hp when I drove it, and I drove it hard. Also, when people post dyno numbers on this board, they are all talking about rwhp, where as the 500hp is at the flywheel for the Z06. That is more like 410rwhp. My new car and TT mods (including exhaust and tune) where far less than the cost of a new Z06!! And really all you need to do to make the Z corner better than the Z06 is put better tire/wheels on her!
If you are talking about a used Z06, then compare that to buying a used Z and then installing FI. I bet you will save $10-$20k, and end up with more rwhp!

This discussion is endless... if you ask the same question on an american car forum about camaros, people will tell you "yeah just do X, Y, and Z to your camaro and you have a 800hp porsche killer" ...
at some point you just have to say "who the F cares" and get what car you want and do what you want to it.

This a good thread that I'm subscribing to because I'm in the same category.
I paid 38K for my 2005 Z roadster. Have more than a few extra dollars into it at this point. So assuming $10-12K for a complete TT setup, I would be in the area of $54K-56K.

I am too that point with my Z as well. I have spent a large amount on NA mods, suspension, brakes and various other things to prepare for FI. Now with the GT-R possibly around the corner, I will definately wait for specs, pricing and availability of this car. If the GT-R doesn't get released, then I will more than likely go FI with the Z.
