Default APS TT Owners...Advice Needed

I'm installing the APS TT kit on my 06 and I'll be running test pipes and the HKS dual exhaust. I know that the free flowing exhaust will increase the boost to 11-12 psi. If I get a boost controller and limit the boost to 9 psi, would that make it safe to run on the out of box tune? Or should I just go pay $500 and get it tuned at the local unichip tuner? The reason I'd like to run a boost controller is so I can limit the boost to 9 psi on pump gas and then run 11-12 psi on 101 octane.

Won't tuning both boost levels yield better safer power?

Save the money on the controller and put it toward the tuner, they can reduce the boost with the Unichip, unless you have the funds ready for a block don't mess with levels higher than 9 psi or so, some have done it but some have lost motors.

That's a good point westpak. I think I'll get the tune.

BTW I'm going to use your washer idea to shim the LHS motor mount. How high did you raise it? 1/8"? 1/4"?

The shim is only required on 06's because of the different steering rack. The LHS turbo will impact the steering knuckle unless you lift the left side of the motor. I'm going to use some washers as shims like westpak has done.

I would recommend getting it tuned. I probably wouldn't even run the out of the box tune even if you didn't do all of the exhaust mods (especially the TP's).

The HKS paired with the pipes will not equal 11-12 lbs of boost. The HKS is not that free flowing. You will be fine with the out of box tune for a while, but like has been posted, just get the tune.

I thought for sure adding test pipes and a dual exhaust would jump the boost up 1-2 psi but I guess I was wrong. I'll get it tuned as suggested. Thanks ppl.

You might see 9 lbs or so, but not 11-12. Like I said, the HKS isn't that free flowing of an exhaust. Now if you ran the APS big pipes with the 3" exhaust, you might see 11-12 lbs of boost out of box. Remember, the unichip comes with a base tune on it which includes boost settings

With big tps and 3" exhaust you will need to turn down the boost via the unichip controler. Zivman I don't know if you have seen the program in the unichip. I have seen a old one mine and the new ones . I can tell you they are not as rich as they were when they first released the kits.

Just for your information: I was running the out-of-the-box tune last year on my APS TT with stock exhaust. I was getting around 8psi. Without doing anything else, I added the APS TD exhaust and Labree testpipes. The boost jumped to 13 psi (13.8 is the max I saw). I had it brought back down to 8.5psi or so...

Thanks for the info Mad. I was sure I had read about it on this forum before. On the other forum, Peter said boost would in fact increase with the test pipes and that I should get it tuned.

That is absolutely true. A custom tune is always best

When I had my kit installed along with 3.5" dp and the 3" exhaust it was hitting 12psi easy out the box. westpak @ japtrix definately had to turn it down to keep everything safe. Do what the others said get it tuned.
