Default oil weights (Summer)

Summer is almost here and it stays around 80 to 90 during our summer here. I have seen a lot of other turboed cars running 15w-50 for warmer climates.

My question is, is 15w 50 too thick for the boosted VQ or is 10w 40 a better choice. There seems to be more choices at 10w 40 then 15w 50. I have only seen Mobile1 at 15w 50.

i'm running 10w40 right now and I HATE it. I'm going back to 5w30.

15w50 is far too heavy for this motor, in my personal opinion. I've had people tell me to run straight 50 weight. That holds in SO MUCH HEAT!

if anything, stick 10w30 with a good oil not known to break down (mobil 1 breaks faster than some synthetics). I suggest Royal Purple's RACE oil (not their regular stuff which breaks down pretty fast), redline, or Schaeffers

check out http://www.nismo.co.jp/products/part...ngine_oil.html
This is NISMO house brand oil

basically, 5W-40 for NA engines
10W-60 for turbo engines (ターボエンジン用) "street sports" <-what ever than means

15w-50 for high output turbo engines (高出力ターボエンジン用) "circuit sports" <- sound like NASCAR to me :-)

Did TN install instructions specify which weight? I know with the APS ST, it stated XXw-40 or XXw-50 was recommended; I chose 50w since I live in Phoenix and with beating the **** out of the car on a regular basis, the extra shearing resistance of 50w seemed appropriate.

TN supplies a case of TS-1 (their brand) oil which is 5w-30. It seems a lot of people are running heavier oil especially in the summer. I thought maybe at least a 10w-30 would be more appropiate for the extra heat of the turbo.

IMO 50 weight is overkill.........at least in these engines.

I'm running 10w40 but oil pressure starts going down at around 2000 miles and I have to top if off (I usually change the oil at 2500 miles)
It's getting worse now that the heat has arrived.
which type of oil will be better 50 or 30?

do u guys even know what the XXwXX stands for? Running a thick oil will do nothing good at all for your engine. Less lubrication isnt a good thing. Thick oils will cake up turbo bearings. NA or turbo u should stay around the manufacturers recommended specifications. If u are overheating the oil, a thermostated oil cooler is the only answer. SOme people have had sucess switching to a high quality, same weight oil. It can reduce temps alot.

that's kinda what this thread is about. I know very little about oil. I'm using 10w40 synthetic because that is what APS recommends for their setup.

Is anyone using an oil cooler on their APS TT setup?

My turbo mfgtr recommends 40 to 50w - your statement misinterprets the purpose of heavier weight oil in FI applications. At 100k rpms and daytime highs of 110+º, I would entrust my snail to a heavier v. lighter weight oil. The shearing forces rendered by FI applications are remarkable, thus 40w - 50w are purposeful.

Having a thick oil doesn't imply less lubrication at all. If you want to stand on your soap box make sure you didn't place it in quick sand. People in hot climates have their oils heat up much faster and the only time the weight really matters(ie could hurt your engine) is when it is dead cold. It's not about overheating the oil it's about having the most protection and a 20w-50 at full temp will outprotect a 5w-30 any day of the week. Actually a dyno(conventional) oil at 20w-50 will outdue most syth 5w-30's in long term radioactive wear tests. One of the guys that I ride with(motorcycles) that is all he does for diesel companies.

Im running an oil cooler with my setup, I beat on the car all the time so I know my oil is probably pretty hot. I don't have the Oil temp or Water Temp setup yet but thats in the works.
