A little off topic but can the 4.2 l stroker be controlled by a piggyback like UTEC or do you need a true standalone? I am very interested and think this is the way to go.

The UTEC could certainly do it, but calling the UTEC a piggyback isn't 100% accurate anyway, since it can fully control the engine if needs be.
I know its been a while since anybody posted in this thread, but does anybody have any experience doing a semi-closed deck conversion on a VQ block? I was thinking it should be superior to sleeving a block as it offers complete support on both the top AND bottom of the liner, with no risk of sinking or leaking... I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on this matter...
By way of comparison, I know that semi-closed deck EJ207 and EJ257 blocks can be made to handle huge cylinder pressures and BMEPs, enough for at least 750-800bhp on a VQ...

People are making that, or close to it, on stock-sleeved VQ's. Sorry, I don't have a good answer for your question....
If that is indeed the case, why do people go ahead and install sleeved shortblocks - at considerable expense I should add? I don't see how a completely unsupported (top AND bottom) aftermarket sleeve can be better than the factory cast-in liner. Sure iron is stiffer than aluminum, but it doesn't make that much sense to me...
No, I can't say that I've ever thought about it... I don't think I'll ever push my VQ hard enough to warrant a girdle, given how strong enough the bottom end is
