Default TT Z: Power Steering Fluid Leak

I have what I think is my first decent-sized problem since I got the twins. Saturday, I am coming back from North Jersey on the NJ Turnpike. The drive was great... no cops at all and traffic was moving 85-95mph in the fast lane!

So, after about 45 minutes of 90+mph, I get off the turnpike and I notice that the power steering pump is making that stereotypical buzzing noise indicating that you are low on fluid. Before anyone asks, no the car did not overheat... water temp stayed rock solid in the center of the temp range the whole time.

I pull into a parking lot and pop the hood... the reservoir is VERY low. I look under the car and there is a pretty steady drip right near the passenger side exhaust manifold. I can also smell burning oil so the fluid is likely hitting something hot (like the manifold). I bought some PS fluid and filled it up -- but of course, the car still leaks. I know that I have to have it looked at, but I was wondering if anyone else has encountered a similar problem.

I suspect that one of the PS lines may have been too close to the cast turbo manifold and melted... but I guess I will know for sure soon.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It is most likely the power steering hose that goes beside your passenger-side turbo. Some of us on here have had the same problem. Just replace the line with a stainless steel braided hose (-6 I believe) and reroute it so it isn't right up next to the turbo.

i had the same exact problem! it was all good though. what mine was that it was rubbing against the manifold and with the heat it in turned leaked. i was fortune enough that sgp 5 mins from my house and got it fixed right back up. they just replace the line and had to make adjustments to the line were it won't happen again. other than that it was all good.

Thanks guys... sounds like this is a pretty common problem and hopefully it will be a painless fix. That makes me feel a little better. I also just found another short thread on the issue from a while ago.

One more question: I plan to drive my car to a shop about 5-10 minutes away. I plan to fill the reservoir before I leave, but I wanted to see if anyone thought this would be a problem... will it damage the pump by driving the car, etc.?

I have APS twins. Someone on the other forum pointed out that the APS turbos are nowhere near as close to the PS line as the Greddy. Was everyone who had this problem running the Greddy kit?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The leaks we have seen here, are the adapter fittings & hoses that GREDDY&APS supplies. The flanges have been showing up a little warped from the welding we guess. We have been milling all of them down real quick before the installs now. No more leaks. That is more than likely the problem. While there you can check the hose as well....

If its coming from the passenger side, its likely the PS line that is dangerously close to the compressor housing. If you crawl under the car, the leak will be very obvious. That line will need to be replaced, and its best to use a new stainless line and reroute it.
