Default 3" Downtube For Turbonetics Kit

I am having a 3" stainless downpipe made for the Turbonetics kit. The stock downpipe is 2.5" and has a 4 bolt flange. The 3" downpipe I am making will have the option of either a 3" V-band flange or 4 bolt flange.

This 3" down pipe will fit the Garrett GT3582R ball bearing turbo with the .82 or the 1.06 A.R housing. The Garrett is available now for $1300 and may be an alternative and cheaper option to the GT-K 550. No testing has been done yet, but the GT3582R with the 1.06 housing will be capable of making big power up top.

If anyone is interested in this 3" stainless downpipe let me know. I can have some more made. Price is undetermined. I am just seeing if anyone is interested.

Nice, are you going to use the 1.06 housing?

I will try the 1.06 housing first. I think it will work well. I think the later spool up will help with the traction issue.

Same turbo the APS ST kit uses... Max flow is about 60 lb/min.. A 1.06 A/R or larger should flow plenty up top but its going to lag pretty bad. The .82 A/R is what APS uses on theirs. Lag shouldn't be bad but still might have flow issues top end.

When do you think we will see max boost with the 1.06? Around 4600?

MAybe...only way to know is put the car on a load based dyno. You might want to go ahead and buy and bring the .82 A/R housing with you also cause if the 1.06 sucks you gonna want to swap on the .82 and see if it gets any better or makes decent power. Might consider going with a different turbo.. That unit isn't going to flow past 500 WHP I don't think. At least not decently... not without cams...

Jet,

nice to see you taking matters into your own! Does that garrett fit the same t3 flange on the up-pipe?

It should... But the turbine housing is probably going to shift the whole unit around a little bit. Might need to modify/move the compressor inlet pipe some... I wonder what dimensions of the compressor housing are..

Jet, thats an interesting proposal you have there. I might be interesting, although it depends on pricing and whether or not I decide to build my motor. Keep me updated man. Thanks.

MIA,

didn't you mention in another past that has other turbine housing with a larger A/R. would these be bolt up to the stage 1 kit? allow more power in the upper revs?

If you are talking Garrett only theres a GT4088R which flows more, would be in a higher efficiency band at 500+ CHP. Its a big turbo though... It does have a lot of different turbine housing options. I just don't know if the compressor would fit. The GT3582R would be in the 72% efficient band at Jets current power level. The GT4088R would be in the 74% band. Theres also the 62-1 that could be used. The full size 62-1 comes with a P trim T4 turbine. .58, .68, .81 and .96 A/Rs are available for that. That would be my first choice. With a P trim wheel I'd try a .68 A/R first. If that didn't flow well enough I'd do the .81. But I think a P trim .68 would flow plenty for this. It would require a new inlet flange on the feed pipe but if you are going to fab piping anyways its not real hard to change them both. It would be in the 76% band at that power level. Max flow is 65 lb/min and spool up should be pretty good still.

MIA,

woops.. I forgot the word "turbonetics" in my previuos post. I was asking what larger turbine housing can be put on the stage 1 turbo.

MIA... my hp goal is 475 rwhp. So I think for my needs the GT3582R would be perfect. From what I understand the BB GT's spool up very quickly so the 1.06 might not be that drastic.

jet,

how much are each of the turbine housings? I suppose you have to buy them all to try them all. what do you do with the ones that you don't end up using?

Looking forward to seeing the results on this. I'm going to hold out to see what Turbonetics does as I'm in no rush to bump up power at the moment.

Have you considered going larger than 3"?

In all honesty theres nothing magical about the GT series. Damn near any turbo with the right A/R and properlly sized turbine will spool up at the same spot. Like I said I would bring both turbine housings just in case.

Theres a couple turbine housings out there for the Stage 1 but nothing direct bolt up.

So I guess the story is the same for the GT-K? Nothing magical? Just another turbo with a higher price tag? I thought extended tip turbines were a plus for spool up.
