Default manual transmission noise

Hey guys. I posted this in the engine/drivetrain section but got no results so i am reposting in the forced induction section since i think you will be able to help me.

Just got back from vacation. My car sat idle for a week. It had no problems (that i know of) before I left.

There is a noticeable clunk (feel and sound) most of the time when i shift into 1st gear and the cement mixer noise is about 3 times as loud at idle(with clutch released) and also when decelerating/engine braking (with clutch engaged).

There is also more noticeable vibration in the shift **** when i hold it.

this is 2nd tranny. jwt clutch and fly. 80k on the car 55k on this clutch and fly.

any ideas?

followup: this morning on the way to work it is even louder. It is so loud that I am holding the clutch in at stop lights to keep it from rattling.

Thanks,

j

so i did some more research and I think my throw out bearing is probably bad. Anyone have any advice to the contrary?

a buddy of mine pointed out a website which contained the following info:

If the noise is only noticeable at idle, does it change when the clutch pedal is depressed? A change would probably indicate a problem with the release bearing or pilot bearing. To find out what is causing the noise, set the parking brake, place the vehicle in neutral and start the engine.

If you hear growling or grinding noises when the clutch is engaged, the cause is the transmission input shaft bearing.

A squealing sound that occurs when the clutch pedal is depressed and held is usually caused by a bad pilot bearing or bushing.

A chirping noise that intensifies when the pedal is slowly depressed would indicate a bad release bearing.

If you hear chirping while idling in neutral and the noise goes away when the pedal is slowly depressed, the fork/pivot ball contact point is making the noise.

THe problem in blue most matches my issues. It appears in the manual that the main shaft bearing is pretty deep in the tranny. Does this mean I will need a new tranny or can i get mine rebuilt?

If i need a new one are there any manufacturers who have high performance transmissions for high hp applications. If i have to do tranny work I might as well put something tough in there in case i ever slap a turbo on the thing.

Thanks,

j
