i want to install a single turbo on my z
ok guys. i am kind off new on the forum. well i am trying to install a single turbo on my car . can i do it my self? i know it takes big dollars to do the job. but i don't want to go outside and buy a kit. i want to build it my self with the correct tools. what injectors should i use, the 440cc? what wastegate?. i only want about 380-420whp.. should i use utech? what PSI?. what else do i need. i have the intercooler, blowoff , t/3-t/4 turbo, and some pipe from the intercoller.. the rest of the pipe can be done at my friends garage. the tuning will be done at speedfoceracing

Honestly you have no idea how much work will need to go into this. The 350z engine compartment is very cramped. The t3/t4 turbo is 30 year old technology not to mention you need another unless you plan to copy the turbonetics or aps systems. If you do attempt to try this based on what you sound like you know you will most likely fail and end up spending more to have a shop put your car back together.
Used turbo kits can be had for cheap on here look in classifieds, also there are lots of superchargers for sale as well.
Rigging up a home made turbo kit is for 3000 dollar civics not 20+ thousand dollar cars. IF you have the tools and the know how then it can be done. Not tryin to be an *** just tryin to save you time and money.

To be honest if I were you, I would just get a used TN or Vortech S-trim blower and have SFR do the rest for you. the Vortech would probably be the cheapest way for you to make good power and installation is cheaper I believe.
get an APS ST kit and have it installed by an authorized APS dealer. (drive your car up to LA and have GT Motorsports install it.)
it is the most complete st kit and will accomplish your HP goals.
edit: with that said. if you are on a budget then wait until you can have it professionally done. it will cost you more in the long run to do it yourself.

Do it yourself, im going too. Search on www.turbomustangs.com they have great forums for diy on turbocharging.
First hand I am going to tell you that you are getting into something quite deep here. I know personally as I spent $10K getting a ST made for my Z and it was a pain and it eventually lead to a blown motor.
While I have come up with a way to mount quite a large ST (650whp capable) on the Z in a effecient manner, the cost of doing so is quite high unless you are buddy buddy with some people who do piping and are able to do machining yourself.
My advice would be to just get a tuner kit from a company and save yourself the hassle.

Im thinking of mounting the turbo on the passenger side of the transmission. Quamen where were you planning on mounting your turbo? Im using a to4b for test fitment and will probably use a master power t70 for my final turbo. I can do piping myself and have friends that run machine shops so getting stuff made isnt a problems for me.

Where the power steering and alternator are and moving them to the other side and removing the A/C. Hard to explain but I had it designed so that you could fit a 4" downpipe and a T70 or possibly bigger turbo. Short piping to intake also and short piping from exhaust also.
Hrm yea i have thought about doing that too but im keeping my a/c I think there is enough room beside the tranny on the passenger side I can route the exhaust from the passenger side header over too the driver side and back into one 2.5" to the exhaust side of the turbo the only problem im going to have is routing the intercooler pipe. I may have to modify some coolant lines or something.
My personal opinion is that it would be a waste of time to compromise design if you are going to spend the money to make a custom single turbo kit. Basically, IMHO, if you are going to have a similar design as another companies design just buy their kit.
I understand that half the fun is designing it and making it yourself, but honestly, if that is what you are in it for I would recommend loosing certain things such as the A/C so that you can make a turely unique and efficent ST kit.
Either way good luck with your kit. I was at one point going to start making my single turbo kit again but I ended up deciding on an SC instead. More so because I can make the entire kit with the exception of the intercooler by myself. So I ended up getting a Vortech V2 head unit. However, I have a few little tricks up my sleeve for the headunit and for the kit itself. I am in fact going to start machining my crank pulley tonight.

A little longer piping is not going to hurt anything and with the turbo back there it keeps heat out of the engine bay. NO way im losing my a/c because it gets too hot here and my car is my daily driver.
Rocks:
If your car is your daily driver then I fully agree with you that the A/C may be necessary especially in a warmer climate.
While I don't think that in the case of a turbocharger longer piping with more bends is extremely hurtful it will add complexity to the kit as you know.
I definitly agree that the turbo in that location will keep the heat out of the engine bay which is always good.
